Wesleyan Holds Virtual Spring Commencement Celebration
On Saturday, April 25, North Carolina Wesleyan College held a virtual spring commencement celebration to honor the Class of 2020. The virtual celebration included a welcome message from President Duff, baccalaureate address by Rev. Dr. Barry Drum and photos of the graduates with their hometowns and majors. In addition, the graduates were treated to a surprise video from award-winning actress, Sharon Lawrence, who was originally scheduled to speak at the April ceremony. Lawrence has played in roles on NYPD Blue, Grey's Anatomy and the CBS comedy, "Me, Myself and I." The virtual celebration can be viewed below.

New RN TO BSN Program Receives Official Accreditation

North Carolina Wesleyan College is excited to announce that its new RN to BSN program has received accreditation approval from its regional accreditor, the
Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges. (SACSCOC)
, after submitting documentation in January. The College began accepting applications for the program this spring, with classes set to begin in the fall.
The 100% online RN to BSN program is designed to help registered nurses achieve the education necessary to broaden their skill set and advance their careers in nursing. This curriculum integrates new and innovative knowledge into daily nursing practices and includes 34 credit hours.

Wesleyan Welcomes New Director of Alumni & Donor Relations
Elena Koutouzos has recently joined the College as Director of Alumni & Donor Relations. She graduated summa cum laude from North Carolina Wesleyan in 2010 with degrees in Business Administration and Accounting. As a student at NCWC, Elena was very active in several organizations. She served as President for Habitat for Humanity, a chair for Rotaract and was a member of the Honors Club and of Spectrum. A Peer Assisted Study Sessions leader, Elena was a recipient of a Valedictorian scholarship from NC Wesleyan and was also recipient of the President's Cup. A member of Phi Eta Sigma National Honor Society, she was selected to Who's Who Among Students. Earning her Masters of Accounting from NC State University, Elena received the MAC (Master of Accounting) fellowship from the North Carolina Institution. She was also inducted into the Beta Gamma Sigma International Business Honor Society while at NC State.
Prior to working at Wesleyan, Elena worked as a mutual fund administrator. Obtaining her CPA license in 2012, Elena was asked about the importance of giving back to NC Wesleyan. "If it weren't for generous donors, I would not have the privilege of being an alum of NCWC. This is why I'm excited to be in my new role at the College as Director of Alumni & Donor Relations. I hope to use this role to help enhance the college and to pay forward the generosity of the donors who helped me."

Wesleyan Adds New Academic Programs
The faculty at North Carolina Wesleyan College recently passed the following new curriculum programs: a B.S. in Healthcare Administration, a B.S. in Sports Administration and three certificate programs in Human Resources, Executive Leadership and Healthcare Administration. These new programs will add to the exceptional array of academic offerings already at Wesleyan, giving students the ability to choose from over 45 undergraduate degree options, 32 minors and two graduate degree programs.

Brittany Edmondson '15
was selected as WITN-TV's Teacher of the Week for May 5. Every week during the school year WITN recognizes a Teacher of the Week. The winner receives a plaque and $100 gift card for school supplies. Brittany is a third grade teacher at E.J. Hayes Elementary School in Martin County. She began her teaching career four years ago as a kindergarten teacher in Martin County before making the switch to third grade. She received her bachelor's degree in 2015 from North Carolina Wesleyan College and her teaching licensure through the University of Mount Olive.

Eddie Moore '09
was recently promoted to Major with the Nash County Sheriff's Office. Major Moore is a 21-year Law Enforcement Officer who has been with the Nash County Sheriff's Office for nearly 20 years. He has been recognized by the Nash County Sheriff's Office twice as Deputy of the Year (2010 and 2015). He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Justice Studies from North Carolina Wesleyan College in 2009 as well as a Master of Science in Management and Leadership from Montreat College.

Debra Joyner Pegram '90
, recently announced her retirement from Beddingfield High School and the Wilson County Schools after 30-plus years as a coach and teacher. She had served as the head girls basketball coach at Beddingfield for 28 seasons. Debra has accepted a position as a part-time physical education teacher at Sallie B. Howard, a charter school, in order to have more time with family. She earned her physical education degree from North Carolina Wesleyan in 1990 where she played basketball and softball.

Latasha R. Hall '07
has been promoted to Interim Director of a new department, Business Services and Collections for the City of Rocky Mount. She will oversee the department until a permanent director has been named. Latasha has served as Business Services Center Manager for the city since August 2013. She graduated from North Carolina Wesleyan College in 2007 with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. She earned a Master's degree in Human Services specializing in Business Management and Counseling from Liberty University.

Tierra A. Norwood '19
has been named Small Business Center Director for Nash Community College. Prior to joining NCC, she served as program associate at the North Carolina Department of Commerce where she worked with the Main Street and Rural Planning Center. Tierra graduated from North Carolina Wesleyan College in 2019 with a Bachelor of Science in Marketing. She also has a certification in Broadcast Communications Technology from the Carolina School of Broadcasting in Charlotte.

Ashton Meredith Felts, Jr. '71 (Mert Felts),
72, of Berlin, Virginia passed away on May 17, 2020 following a courageous 5-year battle with cancer. Mert had a life-long love of the art and science of glassblowing. Many of his pieces are in use today at scientific institutions, and on Christmas trees and shelves of his family and friends. He received his Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from North Carolina Wesleyan College in 1971 (where he snagged the love of his life, Jean Thompson Felts '70). He was a charter member of Nu Gamma Phi Fraternity. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, one son, two daughters, one brother and six grandchildren.

William LeGrand Bennett, Jr., '81,
75, passed away unexpectedly in his home on April 21, 2020. After over a forty year career in banking, LeGrand retired from First Bank of Mayodan. As an avid golfer, he enjoyed playing countless rounds on a number of golf courses in the Pinehurst/Southern Pines area. He attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Administration from North Carolina Wesleyan College in 1981. He is survived by two sisters, nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews and a special friend.

Warren Lewis Bryant (Butch) '78,
66, of Charlottesville, VA, passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, April 14, 2020. Butch worked in the grocery business for the majority of his adult life, most recently at the Mill Creek Food Lion in Charlottesville as the Perishable Manager. He enjoyed fishing and vacationing with family in the Outer Banks each year. Butch also enjoyed farming and gardening at which he was very skilled.He graduated from North Carolina Wesleyan College in 1978 with a Bachelor's degree in Economics and History. He is survived by his mother, wife, one son, one daughter, one sister, two brothers, one nephew, two nieces, aunts, uncles and cousins.

Peggy Hannah Shearin '95
, age 70, a resident of Williamston, NC, died Friday, March 20, 2020. After working to obtain her G.E.D. and a degree in cosmetology from Martin Community College, she worked as a hairdresser in Bear Grass for many years. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Justice and Public Policy from North Carolina Wesleyan College in 1995. She worked with Halifax County Schools for several years with special needs children. She is survived by one daughter, one son, four grandchildren, one sister and three brothers.
