BP. BUDDE UPLIFTS NEXT STEP BREAKFAST 2025; $233,319 RAISED SO FAR, $16,681 TO GO!

The highlight of Samaritan Ministry's year so far is without doubt the exceptionally moving and personal keynote address given by the Rt. Rev. Mariann Budde, Bishop of the Diocese of Washington (EDOW), at our Next Step Breakfast last month.

In her address, Bishop Budde described how Samaritan's flagship Next Step program embodies her own personal spiritual mantra; why she loves Samaritan and has been an dedicated supporter, with her husband, Paul, since moving to DC 11 years ago; and why our mission, values, and results are in her view "mission-critical" at this time, both in the life of our diocese and the wider society as a whole.

After encouraging the assembled guests at the breakfast to deepen their commitment to Samaritan, she announced a special $75,000 grant from EDOW in her capacity as Bishop, and received a standing ovation.

We'd love to share more of her inspiring words, which broke open the the parable of the Good Samaritan from a fresh perspective, and included an admission of her own experience of being the person in need of a hand up when she was a young social worker who'd made a string of poor choices. But instead, we want to encourage you to take the opportunity to view the full video of her brief and remarkable talk here!

You can also watch the entire 108-minute NSB25 program here, or the separate speeches of Linda Cole, Halima Ellams, Joe Kolar, Sy Jones, and David Grove as we post them on our YouTube channel. (And do subscribe while you're there!)

SAMARITAN SERVED 132% MORE DMV AREA RESIDENTS IN 2024 THAN IN THE PRIOR YEAR

Throughout the year, Samaritan Ministry aims to provide you, our supporters and other members of the public, with individual and highly personal stories of the inspiring people who come to us for support in transforming their lives.

But early in each new year, we pull our lens out wider to share the big picture captured by our organization-wide statistics.

What stories do the data tell in 2025? Like last year, we're gratified to report that we served many more people than in the prior year, and while our participants' demographic makeup and needs have shifted, their successes have multiplied!

In 2024, Samaritan served a total of 2,998 individuals in need in the DMV, a 132% increase over the prior year, while staff and volunteer meetings and other contacts with participants increased by more than 40%.

• Of those participants, 1757 were new enrollees in Next Step, a 300% increase from 2023. A total of 1075 participants received direct assistance such as food, clothing, toiletries, and travel assistance.

• Our Next Step participants set more than double the number of goals they did the prior year, and, despite the fact that many of their goals are multi-year ambitions, they achieved 72% of them.

• The number of participants who found jobs increased by 24%.

• Samaritan helped about 30% more returning citizens settle back into society and create meaningful new lives, year-on-year.

SAMARITAN RECEIVES MLK JR. GIFT OF $10,000 REFURBISHMENT FROM MARTHA'S TABLE

In case you missed it when we reported it through our social media, Samaritan Ministry was blown away by becoming the recipient of a Martin Luther King Jr. Day beautification service project organized by Martha's Table on MLK Jr. Day weekend.

Martha’s Table generously donated $10,000 of essential items to Samaritan Ministry’s U Street location and gathered dozens of its staff members and volunteers to assemble and install the new items and clean and refresh what is Samaritan's busiest office.

This thoughtful contribution included supplies, furniture, and decorations, all aimed at supporting our staff and neighbors in need at our U Street location. The project reflected Dr. King’s legacy of service and compassion and brought together community members in a shared commitment to justice, dignity, and care for others.

Samaritan is deeply grateful for Martha’s Table’s support and the tangible impact it makes in the lives of those we serve in our community. We especially would like to thank Tiffany Williams, President & CEO, and her ENTIRE staff, as well as the wonderful and inspiring volunteers, for their dedication and hard work. And a special shout out to Keith Keys, Community Development Manager, Charles Gussom, Director of Community Programs, and Litzi Valdivia-Cazzol, Volunteer and Engagement Manager.

At Samaritan, we'd especially like to thank Anacostia Lead Caseworker Doris McRoy and Partner Council and Volunteer Manager Sy Jones, who coordinated Samaritan's role in the project.

Please see our Facebook page here for many more photos from the uplifting day.
