SRPC at 55: Rooted in History, Focused on the Future

SRPC’s Annual Meeting celebrates a remarkable milestone—55 years of regional planning. Since its founding in 1971, SRPC has helped shape the region through collaboration with local leaders, volunteers, and community partners. This year’s program looks back at defining local projects—from transportation investments and environmental stewardship to land use planning and economic development—and places them in the context of the national planning trends that influenced them. Together, we’ll celebrate the people, partnerships, and projects that built SRPC’s legacy and set the stage for exciting opportunities ahead.

More details and how to register will be shared in the coming weeks..

Transportation

Transportation Bills Move to the Senate

It’s crossover time at the NH legislature and two transportation bills have switched from one chamber to the other. HB2026 comprises the draft update to the state’s 10-year transportation plan. The House passed the bill largely unchanged except for the removal of two projects in Manchester for which funding wasn’t available. The substantial cuts to projects from earlier drafts of the 10-year plan remain. The Senate Transportation Committee public hearing on the bill has not been scheduled. SB627 has moved to the House and proposes an increase to turnpike toll rates for out-of-state EZ-pass users and periodic toll adjustments tied to inflation. SB627 has a scheduled public hearing at the House Public Works and Highways Committee on Tuesday 3/31/2026 at 10:00 a.m.

NHDOT Announces Spring Road Postings Are Here!

Warmer temps mean frost is leaving the ground and our roads are more vulnerable. Temporary weight limits are now posted on select state highways to protect the pavement. Max allowed: 30,000 pounds gross weight. Some vehicles may be exempt (heating oil, milk, maple sap, septic pumpers). Check with your local NHDOT District Engineer.

Economic Development

What Businesses Say about Operating in Somersworth

A recent survey conducted as part of the City’s Economic Development Master Plan chapter update asked businesses to identify the advantages of establishing, operating, or expanding in Somersworth. Responses consistently pointed to community growth, strategic location, relative affordability, and overall community character.

Businesses described Somersworth as a growing community, citing population growth and ongoing change as drivers of opportunity. Its proximity to Dover, Portsmouth, and southern Maine was highlighted as an advantage for market access and workforce connectivity. Affordability also stood out, with respondents noting lower rents, free parking, and comparatively lower real estate costs, along with favorable demographics and market potential.

Survey participants emphasized the importance of supportive city staff, accessible local government, and downtown’s walkability and visibility, including its appeal to Maine residents seeking tax‑free shopping.

Overall, businesses most often cited location and market access (52%), community ties (48%), and cost of doing business (39%) as Somersworth’s biggest advantages, with quality of life, limited traffic, and infrastructure also noted.
