A Note from our Executive Director

Dear Lori,

This month, we celebrated Independence Day. But as parents, teachers, and caregivers, every day should be a celebration of independence. For all of us who care for children, the bittersweet truth is that if we are successful, our children grow up to be independent, separate, and self-sufficient. Watching our children grow can be both a joy and painful. As we hear our two-year olds proclaim, “NO! I do it myself!" We may simultaneously feel pride and frustration. That’s where a partnership with preschool comes in.

At LEAP, we support children to be independent – to feed themselves, to regulate their feelings, to use their words. Next month, we will see our children start anew – they may be entering Kindergarten and T-K, or starting college. We may shed a tear, as they walk away from us, proud, capable, and independent. This independence deserves all the fireworks and celebration we can muster.

If you’d like to join us for a Breakfast with Babies to learn more about how we nurture growth and independence, please contact Kara Shoemaker.

Santa Barbara County's Childcare Facilities Needs Assessment

The Santa Barbara County Child Care Facilities Needs Assessment is now available! Highlights from the Assessment include:

  • The unmet need for care is most pronounced for younger children (ages 0-3).
  • Only 1 in 10 infants/toddlers have access to a licensed child care space.
  • Of the 210 child care operators surveyed from across the county, 133 stated a willingness to expand or start up new facilities to meet the need.
  • A Child Care Facilities Asset Map and Recommendations are included, which provide resources for the county, next steps, and regional snapshots.
