There's No Such Thing as "Away": Rethinking Waste in Truckee-Tahoe

"When you throw something away, it goes somewhere." That simple reminder from Waste Free Tahoe founder María López Godoy set the tone for recent Truckee Chamber Lunch & Learn and Climate Transformation Alliance presentations on waste reduction. Attendees learned that Truckee has not had a landfill since 1995. Instead, local waste is sorted at the Eastern Regional Materials Recovery Facility before being shipped to destinations as far away as Nevada and overseas for cardboard.

López Godoy also dispelled common recycling myths. Many ideas in her presentation were applicable to households as well as businesses. She encouraged businesses to understand their waste streams, review disposal costs, improve bin signage, reduce single-use products, and train employees on proper sorting. As California regulations continue to evolve, reducing waste is both good environmental stewardship and good business. Read some simple steps you can take now to save in the full article on Truckee.com.
