BIXBY BULLETIN NEWSLETTER

December 2023
Director's Dispatch
Remember the first time you visited the Bixby and looked up at the dome? Or the first book you checked out when you signed up for your library card?

The Bixby is your home, so come on home. Our library has been a warm and welcoming community destination for as long as we’ve all been alive. Our history goes back generations to the people who built our five-town community.

I hope you’ve come to appreciate the Bixby's staff and volunteers as much as I do. Each of them put their heart and mind into making a place that is welcoming, well-resourced, clean, tidy, fun, and in good repair (no small feat for a 111-year-old building).

Perhaps you’ve seen our bright yellow annual appeal letter in your mailbox or received an email suggesting that we could really benefit from your contribution to the Bixby. If you can donate to the library this year, I hope you will. You are a part of something special that people from all over the world admire.

All of our resources are free and open to everyone, 37 hours a week. When you give back to the Bixby, you are providing for all the members of our five towns; that means you, too!

Thank you for being a part of the Bixby's story. We wish you a wonderful holiday season.

Warmly,
Library Director

Thank You For Supporting Your Local Library
Thank you to everyone who has contributed to our Annual Appeal Fund. The resources, programs, and events we cherish at the Bixby are made possible through your support.

If you haven't made a contribution, there is still time to be entered in our Annual Appeal merch raffle! Donate by December 31, 2023, and you'll be entered into a raffle for one of three handy Bixby canvas totes filled with a pair of Bixby mugs.
"Wool & Water" Exhibit Brightens the Community Room
Have you stopped by the Community Room lately? We are the proud hosts of "Wool and Water," an exhibit by fiber artist and scientist Michale Glennon. The exhibit blends fiber arts with scientific data to highlight issues impacting the quality of our waterways. Glennon depicts changing lake temperatures, the effects of aquatic invasive species, and more through the visual medium of clothing, wall hangings, and tiny frogs. To hear Glennon discuss the project, join us for an artist talk on Saturday, January 27th, 11-12 PM.
"Nebizun: Water is Life" Exhibit Unveiled in Bixby Hall
We are thrilled to host an exhibit from the Abenaki Arts & Education Center titled "Nebizun: Water is Life." The exhibit showcases the intimate connection between the Abenaki people and the waterways of Vermont and beyond. As stewards of the environment, the Abenaki people know how essential water is to foodways, medicine, and everyday activities that others may take for granted. Come explore this powerful exhibit upstairs in Bixby Hall.
Congratulations to Our LEGO Robotics Teams
Congratulations are in order for our LEGO Robotics teams! Last weekend, The Chicken Tenders and the Sparkly Squirrels put their hard work to the test at the FLL Robotics Northern Qualifier. They secured a coveted spot among the top teams advancing to the State final competition at Norwich University this January. Well done, teams! Best of luck in the final -- we're rooting for you!
Comfortable New (Old) Chairs in the Community Room
Former Bixby Library Director, Jane Spencer, isn't done sharing her love with the Library. In 2018, Spencer began a determined mission to refinish and reupholster these beautiful 110-year-old chairs. Now, the chairs have been spiffed up and returned to the Bixby, and you can reap the benefit of her hard work! Come sit for a spell and enjoy these comfortable, beautiful chairs in the Community Room.
Librarians' Corner
Are the rising costs of streaming services bringing you down? The average US consumer spends around $50 per month on streaming services alone. Why not take advantage of the library's FREE digital offerings instead? We have a great collection of DVDs at the Bixby, including popular new releases like Oppenheimer, Barbie, and Everything Everywhere All at Once and old favorites for all ages. Using your library card, you can stream films and TV shows from the comfort of your home through Kanopy and Hoopla. Learn more about our streaming services here and take advantage of all that your Bixby Library has to offer!

The holiday season is here and so is our holiday books collection! Check out our treasure trove of holiday books in the Children's Room. For kids looking to keep busy during the upcoming winter break, we have a limited stash of But Why: Activity Books for Curious Kids.

Miss Addison County, Hannah Roque, will be joining us as a guest reader for Storytime on Friday, December 8th. Fantasy Club continues to meet weekly on Tuesdays from 5:30 to 7 PM for teens interested in all things Magic the Gathering and Dungeons & Dragons.
Mary Neffinger, Children & Youth Services Librarian
December is always a fun time of year, and there are many activities and programs this month at the Bixby. Two things I am most excited about are Ornament Making on Saturday, December 9th, and Bixby's Book Club on Tuesday, December 12th. All ages can drop in between 11 and 2 to make an ornament. You can choose from a snowman, a gingerbread man, or a tree made out of recycled books.

This month's book club will discuss Fun Home by Alison Bechdel. This National Bestseller is a graphic novel/memoir about the author's relationship with her late father. I haven't started reading this book yet, but it looks like it will be an interesting one to discuss.
Martha Sanborn, Circulation & Information Desk Manager
Happy holidays to all! This winter season, celebrate a lesser-known holiday with us: International Games Day! On Wednesday, December 20th, we will learn and play Settlers of Catan. Newbies and seasoned professionals alike are welcome.

Art lovers have a lot to look forward to this month at the Bixby. The first meeting of our Fiber Arts Circle took place last month, providing an opportunity for people from the age of 8 to the age of 80 to craft together. Check out photos from the event below! Want to get in on the fun? Join us on Saturday, December 16th, for our second Fiber Arts Circle, designated bragging time, tea, and bring cookies if you would like!
The art doesn't stop there. On Tuesday, January 2nd, ring in the new year and set your intentions at our SoulCollage® event. We will use collage materials to create a set of tarot-style cards, which you can use to interpret your past, present, and future. This project requires no prior artistic experience. All it takes is intuition! Spots are limited; send me an email to sign up. I hope we get the chance to create together this month.

An Atlas Of Geographical Wonders by Jean-Christophe Bailly
This beautiful, coffee table-sized book explores the 18th-century fascination with comparing and contrasting what explorers around the world had discovered in the previous century. We recently added the book to our collection because the rivers, lakes, and mountains we know and love are featured prominently throughout. Even on a global scale, we're kind of a big deal when it comes to the natural features that we enjoy every day.

Babel by R. F. Kuang
R.F. Kuang's Babel contains an intricate confluence of history, magic, and language. Kuang's knowledge of the setting and linguistics illuminate the dark academic realm of 1830s Oxford, England. Babel is gripping, readable, and deep, highlighting racial dynamics in 19th-century England and how the words we use shape the world we live in.

Winter's Gift by Jane Monroe Donovan
Winter's Gift, a picture book from our holiday collection written and illustrated by Jane Monroe Donovan, feels like it could be set in Vermont. The story follows a lonely man and a lost horse in a rural county setting, each yearning for comfort, companionship, and that most elusive gift, hope. This beautiful story is quietly told and complemented by beautiful, soft paintings, reminding even the most cynical of readers that the heart can recover and go on.

News from the Bixby's History Collection
If you thought the Bixby's historical collections were limited to books and papers, think again!

The metal objects in these pictures are great examples of historical records; they give us information about historical lives, livelihoods, industries, and habits. Some might have been used every day until they wore out, fell off, or were thrown away; others may have been designed for one-time use, or they might have changed hands frequently. Maybe they wouldn't have been all that interesting to the folks who used them years, decades, or centuries ago, but they can tell us a lot about day-to-day life in the past.

These artifacts make you wonder: what might the boring things we use every day tell a future researcher about us? What could this imaginary person learn about life in 2023 from your toothbrush, your favorite pair of jeans, or the contents of your wallet?

Each Café is different, as the conversation is guided by attendees.
