BIXBY BULLETIN NEWSLETTER
December 2022
I’d like to personally invite you to join us at the Bixby this Saturday morning, December 3rd, to set the tone for your holiday season with some good old-fashioned Christmas cheer.
The Bixby’s Holiday Stroll is a beloved tradition that predates my tenure and was one of many events put on pause since 2019. I’ve had a great time reaching out to those who created the event to bring it back to life and am pleased that most of the original cast will be returning to create a joyous experience for you.
Santa will take a break from toymaking to read ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas to the tots in the Children’s Room at 10:30 am. Beloved guitarist and singer-songwriter, Jon Gailmor tells me he is so happy to be returning to serenade us and promises to leave children and adults alike “feeling renewed and hopeful,” starting at 11 am.
Maiden Vermont, the famed women’s a cappella chorus who specialize in barbershop style harmonies, met and decided that they would come back together for the first time in three years, just to perform at the Bixby! If you just imagine them lining the balcony and filling up the library with their voices, you know you can’t miss it. And who knows, maybe Jon will join them for an encore?
We are especially grateful for the members of the local Women’s Forum who have rallied to reprise their menu of delicious homemade goodies and yummy punch. And don’t forget the Friends’ Book Sale from 9 am to 1 pm in the basement to find just the right gift for everyone on your list.
See you on Saturday!
Warmly,
Catharine Hays, Library Director

The LEGO Robotics Teams are Having Fun While
Hard at Work for January Competition
Our Lego Robotics Challenge and Explore Teams are gearing up for their competition at Norwich University at the end of January. The Explore Team has assembled their robot and is working on their poster. The Challenge Team has been programming their robots to complete tasks related to renewable energy. They have been researching local renewable power options including visiting Monument Farms to learn about cow power and contacting GMP about the stats on renewable power options in our grid. The LEGO First Robotics Club is made possible thanks to grants from Collins Aerospace and the Vermont Community Foundation’s Spark Connecting Community grant program.

The holiday season is here and so are our holiday books! Enjoy the bounty of beautiful holiday stories out now in the Children's Room. This month, our new teen program, Magic the Gathering Club, will start meeting weekly on Tuesdays from 5:30-7 pm. New faces are welcome. No experience is needed. Our weekly Storytimes continue in the Children's Room. Join us for stories, a craft, and more. This month, in lieu of Lego Club, we will be using that time to make ornaments, on Saturday, December 17th.

Read a New Middle-Grade Book by a Local Author
Grounded for all Eternity is the debut offering from a local Vermont author, Darcy Marks. A group of kids from hell come to Earth on one of the craziest nights of the year—Halloween—in this snarky, witty middle-grade adventure about teamwork, friendship, shattering expectations, and understanding the world (or otherworld) around us. This book was an enjoyable read, with likable characters and an interesting premise. This would be a great choice for those who can't get enough of Halloween.

Cook Up Something Delicious with the Kids
I love to cook and bake all throughout the year, but there’s something special about cooking on these nice, chilly days, and of course, for the holidays. The Kid’s Cookbook is full of fun recipes like banana pancakes, fresh tomato salsa, and smashed potatoes. Some recipes are quite simple, like the chocolate-dipped treats, while some are more complicated, like super shrimp stir-fry, making it a good cookbook choice for families.

Play Catan to Trade, Build and Settle with the Family
This strategy game is an international favorite for good reason. As a settler on the isle of Catan, your mission is to develop the land by using resources of grain, wool, ore, brick, and lumber to build roads, settlements, and cities. This game is easy to learn, fast-paced, and interactive making it fun for the whole family.
