DR MARY IVEY JOINS MEDICAL STAFF AT MCLAREN NORTHERN MICHIGAN
McLaren Northern Michigan is pleased to announce that Mary Ivey, MD, has joined the medical staff at McLaren Northern Michigan.  Dr. Ivey will practice with Bay View OB/GYN in Petoskey.

Dr. Ivey's love for science began at a young age.  After completing her undergraduate degree in Chemistry at Troy State University in 1988, she pursued her Master's degree in Biochemistry at Auburn University, graduating in 1991.  Her fascination for medicine continued as she did research in biochemistry at the University of North Dakota School of Medicine for four years before beginning medical school in 1995.  Having a passion for women's health and obstetrics, she completed her residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology from Grand Rapids Medical Education Partners in Grand Rapids, Michigan in 2003.  More
MUNSON HEALTHCARE CHARLEVOIX HOSPITAL WELCOMES DIRECTOR OF QUALITY/RISK MANAGEMENT
Munson Healthcare Charlevoix Hospital is pleased to welcome its newest administrative team member, Allen Stout, who has been named Director of Quality/Risk Management.
 
Mr. Stout is not unfamiliar with Munson Healthcare.  Most recently, he has been working as an analyst at Munson's system level, where he has been involved in the optimization of system performance and continuous improvement of patient care and outcomes.
 
Allen has a master's degree in epidemiology and a bachelor's of arts in psychology and holds the rank of Major in the Michigan Air National Guard.  His wide-range background and experience are sure to make a strong addition to the hospital. More  
SCHOLARSHIP WILL SEND NORTH CENTRAL STUDENT TO IRELAND
North Central Michigan College and the Robert Emmet Society are seeking entries for a scholarship contest that will send a student abroad.  The competition is based on essay contest, academic achievement, student activities, and an interview with College and society representatives.
 
Applicants must be enrolled in at least seven credits each semester in an academic program for North Central for the 2017-2018 school year and be committed to studying at GMIT from mid-September through mid-December, 2018.  Participants must submit an essay on the topic, "How do the political values of Robert Emmet, Irish patriot and namesake of Emmet County, relate to our world and our lives today?"  More  
CHARLEVOIX COUNTY VETERANS TRANSPORTATION PROGRAM ANNOUNCED
The Charlevoix County Board of Commissioners recently approved a joint effort between the Charlevoix County Veterans Affairs Office and the Charlevoix County Transit to provide expanded transit service to veterans of the County.
 
Currently, Charlevoix County Transit provides free transportation to veterans going to the Gaylord VA Clinic.  This cooperative project between the two county departments will allow the Transit to provide service to other VA Clinics in the region.  Currently, the Veterans Affairs Office plans to authorize transportation on a regular basis to Gaylord, Saginaw and Traverse City.  The two departments will establish a trip authorization procedure that will allow Transit to provide service to veterans without a long paperwork process for the veteran. More
REGISTRATIONS ARE OPEN FOR A FREE CHRONIC PAIN SELF-MANAGEMENT WORKSHOP IN CHARLEVOIX.
To help seniors become better self-managers of chronic health conditions, the Area Agency on Aging of Northwest Michigan (AAANM), the Charlevoix County Commission on Aging and Michigan State University, College of Human Medicine in conjunction with Partners in Aging Strategies and Training (PAST) are offering several FREE Healthy Aging workshops in northern Michigan.   
 
The first Chronic Pain PATH workshop will take place on Monday mornings in February and March at the Charlevoix Senior Center.  Developed by Stanford University, Chronic Pain PATH provides information and techniques to cope with the challenges associated with chronic pain.  The free, six-session workshop is for adults living with chronic pain and their family caregivers.  More

CAMP DAGGETT'S 9TH ANNUAL FATHER/SON WEEKEND
This year's 9th Annual Father/Son Weekend will be Friday to Sunday, February 16-18, 2018.  The price will be $175 / Father & Son plus $50 for each additional son.  The son needs to be 7-14 years old but the father, grandfather, stepfather, divorce dad, or big brother can be any age.
 
The theme for the meals will again be wild game and we will be keeping everyone busy with a variety of activities.

CALL FOR LETTER OF INTENT
Char-Em United Way's 2018 community investment process is 
underway with a call for letters of intent to apply.  Non-profit agencies which provide programs and services meeting the health and human service needs of Charlevoix and Emmet County residents are encouraged to apply.
 
Applications can be requested by contacting United Way at 231.487.1006 or info@charemunitedway.org.  Letters of intent will be reviewed and invitations to apply for a grant will be emailed the week of February 5th.  For those invited to apply for general grant funding, applications are due to Char-Em United Way on March 23, 2018.  "We are very excited to announce this year's funding availability," states Lorraine Manary, United Way CEO.  More

NOTED MULTICULTURAL EXPERT TO SPEAK AT NORTH CENTRAL MICHIGAN COLLEGE 
Dr. David Pilgrim, one of this country's leading experts on multiculturalism, diversity and race relations, will speak at North Central Michigan College on Wednesday, January 17, 2018, as part of the College's Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day activities. The lecture will be at 12:15pm in the cafeteria on the Petoskey campus.
 
Dr. Pilgrim is best known as the founder and curator of the Jim Crow Museum, a 5,000-piece collection of racist artifacts located at Ferris State University.  The museum uses objects of intolerance to teach tolerance.  Dr. Pilgrim's writings, many found on the museum's web site (ferris.edu/jimcrow), are used by scholars, students and civil rights workers to better understand historical and contemporary expressions of racism.  More
