Keeping Up With The EDC
Today's Moment in
Prince George's County Black History
Welcome to today's moment in Prince George's County Black History.

The building now known as Baby Dee’s Guest Club was first constructed in 1912. Originally constructed as a grocery store in the Town of North Brentwood, the first incorporated African American community in Prince George’s County.

The building came to be known as “Sis’s Tavern” during the 1950’s and 1960’s. Local residents remember when the tavern was a well known social attraction that hosted performers such as Duke Ellington and Pearl Bailey.

In 1978, Sis’s Tavern was reopened as “Baby Dee’s Guest Club,” which remained in business until approximately 1996. Owned by a local African American resident, the property was an important commercial and social fixture in North Brentwood, first as a grocery store and later as a tavern. It is still a recognizable landmark in the community.

DID YOU EAT YOUR VEGGIES?

Meet Gale Ann Livingstone (affectionately known as Farmer Gale), owner of Deep Roots Farm in Upper Marlboro, Maryland. Deeps Roots has been providing fresh, organic, LOCALLY grown vegetables, herbs, and fruits to the Prince George’s County Community since 2020.

After leasing several different farms for numerous years, Farmer Gale decided it was time to purchase her own land and provide a “Farm-To-Table” method for delivering the highest quality fruits and vegetables.

Deep Roots specializes in Community Supported Agriculture (CSA). CSA is a crop-sharing method that connects farmers directly to consumers. At Deep Roots, members subscribe to a share in the farm's production for a season and receive weekly harvests, cultivating a personal relationship between them. While the farmer is supplying fresh seasonal organically grown produce, the member is providing access to direct resources. It is the most direct farm-to-table method available.

According to Farmer Gale, “Deep Roots does more than just help build the agricultural community through crop-sharing, [they] focus on the future of our planet by promoting increased soil health.” Farmer Gale states, “soil health is intrinsically linked to the total health of our food system. Affecting everything from plant health to human well-being. The idea is to create farm systems that work in harmony with nature to improve the quality of life for every creature involved.”

When you are looking to enjoy delicious niche items like baby ginger and broccolini as well as other incredible vegetables grown here in Prince George’s County, or if you are interested in becoming a member of a spectacular Community Supported Agriculture program please visit Deep Roots Farm by clicking https://deeprootsfarm.us/
