About the Monterey Bay Black Folks Event Calendar
The purpose of the Monterey Bay Black Folks Event Calendar is to connect the Black Community of CSU Monterey Bay with the local Black Communities of the Greater Monterey Bay Area. The idea for the calendar came out of the community forums organized as part of CSUMB's annual Super Saturday Black student recruitment events. The Calendar is edited by Steven Goings with new editions being released every Monday. Don't forget there is also a Facebook Group: Monterey Bay Black Folks Calendar where you can post anything related to Black Folks directly.

Members of America’s armed forces understand one truth better than most: The greatest sacrifice any person can make is to give up their life in service to something greater than themselves.
And on Memorial Day, our country joins together to honor our service members who made that ultimate sacrifice in defense of our country and its highest ideals.
Generations of Black people have given their lives while wearing one of America’s uniforms, many in hopes that their service would cause others to see their humanity and that their commitment would lead to real freedom and equality for them and their loved ones.
Their hope has not yet been fully realized, and it’s on those of us who want a more just and equal nation to keep pushing until it is.
Today, as we remember the heroes we’ve lost, let us all be inspired by their extraordinary courage, and pledge to do what we can in our time to ensure that America lives up to the values they fought to defend.
In Power,
Derrick Johnson
President and CEO

Two years after the horrific murder of George Floyd and our world-shaking movement demanding equal justice and police accountability, we’ve achieved what was once unthinkable:
With violence against Black Americans as relevant a danger as ever, we MUST keep fighting to ensure our communities are served and protected, not threatened and killed, by law enforcement.
- Calling on Congress to pass legislation ENDING qualified immunity for police officers
- Lobbying the Biden administration to transform policing practices to include a focus on implicit bias and officer mental health
- And demanding the Department of Justice be given authority to enforce the nation's civil rights laws when they are violated by law enforcement officers

In the Spotlight:
B.L.A.A.C.'s Racial Recognition” Diversity, Equity & Inclusiveness Training 14-Week Online (hybrid) Course Starts June 22
Contact: Black Leaders and Allies Collaborative
- info@blaac.org;
- 831-377-8995 Limited Seating Available
“The fast-growing movement embracing diversity, equity and inclusion in the workplace (DEI) has the potential to be a game-changer in improving race relations. Both management and front-line employees can better understand these powerful issues and apply collaborative techniques through a 12-week online course taught by Monterey Peninsula-based “Black Leaders and Allies Collaborative (BLAAC).”
Although the overview course philosophy, called “Euro-centric Cultural Reflectionism” (ECCR), sounds complicated and academic, its key facets are actually quite relatable. The intimate classes focus on “racial recognition” that objectively explains past beliefs and attitudes about racial identity, perceptions and relations and helps shift one’s perspectives towards forward-thinking behaviors.
Among many of the subjects covered, participants in the course will:
- Identify and talk about their feelings on common racial topics
- Learn to recognize embedded attitudes and reactions
- Develop an understanding for racial, economic, and social disparities
- Master the self-fulfilling concept of “perpetual circumstance”
- Realize the pain and beauty of blackness in America
- Acquire the tools to shift from a "fixing" mentality to a "working with" mentality
Says Williams, course facilitator, ECCR developer, founder and Executive Director of the local non-profit, nonpartisan organization: “Our historical patterns of poor race relations are not only a matter of what we do, but also a byproduct of who we are, both individually and corporately. ECCR is not only DEI training, but also a methodical course to promote and achieve a deeper sense of appreciation and healing as it relates to interracial relationships of all kinds. The positive feedback we’re getting from those who’ve completed this course is tremendous. Several have praised it as a life-changing experience.”
The price for the full course, including support materials, is offered on a sliding scale with qualified scholarships available. To register or to receive more information, send an email to info@blaac.org or click to www.blaac.org/eurocentric-cultural-reflectionism.

The state redistricting commission split up the Monterey Bay and combined the majority of our current State Assembly district with San Luis Obispo County. As someone who has lived and worked in all three counties, I bring the most local knowledge and expertise to the table, and I look forward to showing you that I'm ready to hit the ground running on Day One as your next assembly member.
Thank you for your continued support of my campaign. I couldn't do it without you!

TAKE ACTION:
URGE PRESIDENT BIDEN TO CANCEL STUDENT DEBT
There is no plan to close racial wealth gaps that does not include addressing the student debt crisis. Student debt relief is the much-needed policy solution in the midst of this economic crisis.
$10,000 is not enough. Data suggest that cancellation policies beyond $50,000 without means-testing would benefit all demographics, eliminate racial disparities in student debt, and boost our struggling economy. This will:
- Provide Black borrowers with opportunities to pursue homeownership
- Develop economy-boosting discretionary income
- Fuel upward mobility in the Black community and equitable efforts to close the racial wealth gap
