Black Forest Road

Construction Update

Dec. 8, 2022

Project progress update

As we come into the holiday season, the Black Forest Road Widening project continues to make noticeable progress toward its 2024 completion, and the project team is grateful for the public’s patience in our busy construction zone.

Recent progress milestones include:

  • Significant work on the southbound bridge over Cottonwood Creek, with crews presently backfilling at the bridge abutments
  • Completion of several elements within the complex weave of underground utilities being installed or improved as part of this project, including a 36-inch stormwater line
  • Grading for the new roadway between Vollmer Road and Foxtrot Lane
  • Completion of curb and gutter and asphalt paving on the west side of Black Forest Road between Woodmen and Vollmer Roads, as shown in the photos below.

We expect to move traffic onto the new pavement between Woodmen Road and Vollmer Road in early 2023, enabling crews to begin work on the eastern half of that segment of Black Forest Road. We will also achieve several more progress milestones in the first half of 2023.

“We’re pleased with our progress so far, and barring any major delays due to weather or resources, we expect to finish this project as scheduled in 2024,” said Mike Chaves, engineering manager for the City of Colorado Springs.

New paving activity completed from Woodmen Road to

Vollmer Road will open to the public over the next few weeks.
