Black Forest Road

End of Year Update

December 8, 2023

Impacts next week, no work Dec. 23 - Jan. 3

Motorists on Black Forest Road will encounter temporary traffic signals and one-lane operations Monday, Dec. 18, through Friday, Dec. 22, at Silver Ponds Heights and north for about 1,000 feet. This work is necessary for work in and under Black Forest Road.

The temporary traffic signals will control one-way traffic on Black Forest Road, allowing only one direction of traffic at a time. The signals will be timed to maximize traffic flow, and the project team will monitor the signals to ensure timing allows the best traffic flow.

Silver Ponds Heights turn restriction

During this work, right turns will not be allowed from Silver Ponds Heights to northbound Black Forest Road. Motorists will be directed left, south on Black Forest Road, then right on Research Parkway to the roundabout at Wolf Lake Drive, where they can turn around to return to Black Forest Road.

Holiday Break

Construction on the Black Forest Road widening project will shut down for the holidays Friday, Dec. 22, and resume Tuesday, Jan. 2. The project team—the City of Colorado Springs staff, Basis Partners, Wildcat Construction, and the many consultants and subcontractors—wish you happy holidays and thank you for your patience and support this past year.

The project is on track for completion in late 2024, despite record rains in May and June that impacted construction for weeks. We achieved several milestones in 2023, including:

  • Completed major construction at the Black Forest Road intersections with Vollmer Road, Foxtrot Lane, and Cowpoke Road, as well as substantial progress at the intersection of Research Parkway.
  • Constructed new pavement for two lanes of southbound traffic that currently carries both directions of traffic. When the project is complete, each direction of Black Forest Road traffic, northbound and southbound, will have two lanes.
  • Built and opened a new bridge over Cottonwood Creek, now carrying both directions of traffic, and made significant progress including girder placements on a second bridge at the same location. When the project is complete, each direction of Black Forest Road traffic, northbound and southbound, will have its own two-lane bridge over the creek.
  • Demolished the original bridge over Cottonwood Creek and installed drop structures in the creek to reduce the flow of water and mitigate future erosion.
  • Poured 18,000 square yards of concrete and laid 7,000 tons of asphalt
  • Laid more than 15,000 feet of underground utility lines and pipes
  • New sidewalk, stormwater drainage, curb and gutter along most of the Black Forest Road project zone

Once again, the project team is grateful for your patience during this project, and wish you a wonderful 2024.

Stay Informed

The project is widening the roadway to two lanes in each direction between Woodmen Road and Research Parkway. Funded through the Pikes Peak Rural Transportation Authority (PPRTA) “A” List of projects, work is scheduled to be complete in late 2024.
