Black Giving Collective Fund established:

ACF pledges initial $50K + additional $50K match

In August, Akron Community Foundation announced the establishment of the Black Giving Collective Fund, the newest affiliate fund at the community foundation. Led by a group of the foundation's board and affiliate fund board members, including Tracy Carter, Theresa Carter, Carla Chapman, Bennett Gaines, Kendra Philon and Dr. Rachel Talton, the foundation committed $50,000 to establish the fund, with an additional $50,000 offered if the fund can raise the same by March 31, 2024. Your gift of any size can help this vital new fund reach its goal and will benefit the Black community in Greater Akron forever.

Nearly $4 million distributed in quarterly grants

Akron Community Foundation announced quarterly grants and distributions totaling $3,813,325 to benefit hundreds of nonprofits in our community. Grants approved this quarter include:

Civic Affairs grants totaling $615,500

Included in this round of civic affairs awards is a $25,000 grant to Signal Ohio to help launch Signal Akron, a new local media resource that will create stories in different formats across multiple platforms. The Signal Akron website will be part of a larger network and will be free to access for residents, covering daily stories about topics like government, public safety, education, and local arts and culture.

Summit County Opioid Healing Fund grants totaling $445,000

A total of 32 grants were awarded to nonprofits supporting Summit County residents directly impacted by the opioid epidemic, such as a grant to Broken Chains Ministry to support Lydia’s Home, a peer-based, residential recovery program for women. Grants from this fund are awarded to programs that offer peer support services, recovery-oriented services, and community-based recovery events. This fourth round of funding brings grants from the fund to over $1 million.

Food Pantry Capacity Fund grants totaling $179,600

Due to the current food crisis caused by the ending of emergency Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits earlier this year, as well as inflation which has resulted in steep increases in food costs, the foundation created a grant process to benefit organizations providing food to residents in Summit County ZIP codes with the highest food insecurity rates. A total of 22 grants were awarded.
