"Afrofuturist Sci-Fi Punk Musical"
That's the mind-bending genre of film Neptune Frost, which premiered at Cannes and showed at WRIF (White River Indie Film Festival) in 2022. Filmed in Rwanda and set in Burundi, it tells the tale of an technokinetic runaway who falls in love with a laborer who mines high-tech ore. Dartmouth College professors Iyabo Kwayana and Misty De Berry dug deep into this acclaimed film and its significance in the history of Afrofuturism as a subgenre in a WRIF conversation moderated by Prof. Desirée Garcia. (The film is now available for streaming.)

The power of the gaze
This WRIF conversation led by JAM board member Tamara Waraschinski with Taylor Ho Bynum, Director of the Coast Jazz Orchestra; Alisa Swindell, HOOD Curator of Photography; Lechelle Gray, Associate at the Creative Discourse Group; and filmmaker/JAM producer Jordyn Fitch unpacked issues of the cinematic gaze and power unearthed in Alain Gomis' documentary Rewind and Play (WRIF 2023, now streaming). The film's immersive portrait of Thelonious Monk shares unseen archival footage highlighting systemic discrimination while underscoring Monk's artistic brilliance, resilience, and composure in the face of disrespect and intolerance.
