Greetings!
As we enter Black History Month, we recognize the value of Black lives and the stories and traditions of Black and African American people. We are reminded that our denomination was built on a solid foundation of social justice. We honor People of African Descent who have been part of our denomination throughout our history as a church and have shaped us into who we are.
We recognize that the celebration of Black lives in our church and in American society is important 365 days a year, not just during Black History Month. May those of us who are not of African Descent always remember that solidarity is discipleship. The right to learn about Black history is sacred and necessary for all of us. The lives and achievements of Black people are vital knowledge, for all of us. Despite the fact that our nation must face the harsh reality that Black history does involve stories of hardship and discrimination, we know that these stories teach us about courage and tenacity in the face of hate. They remind us that our sacred work is not finished. These lessons are vital to the moral development of our nation.
Let’s prayerfully enter Black History Month, with gratitude and remember our sacred calling to solidarity, to justice, and to love.
You are loved,
Rev. Jakob
