In honor of Black History month, the Board of Education and the Rochester City School District are hosting a black history panel discussion on Tuesday, February 25, 2020 at the East High School Collaboratorium.

Approximately 75 to 100 students from East High School and Leadership Academy for Young Men will participate in these panel discussions. The event will be broadcast live at www.rcsdk12.org/bhmpanel so students from Leadership Academy for Young Men can participate at their school, and it will also give other schools and the public the opportunity to watch the event.

The panel discussions will be broken into two groups:

  • Local African American History
  • Career Path

Students will have the opportunity to learn more about local African American History from Dr. Walter Cooper, Dr. David Anderson, Dr. Melody Cofield, Shawn Dunwoody, and Delores Radney.

  • Dr. Walter Cooper is an American scientist, humanitarian, activist, and educator. A retiree of Eastman Kodak, Cooper has shown a long-time commitment to the education of children in our community, and Rochester’s School No. 10 is named in his honor, the Dr. Walter Cooper Academy.

  • Dr. David Anderson is a visiting community scholar at Nazareth College. Anderson has been a featured storyteller at a number of RCSD schools having taught on the history of famous abolitionist, writer, and statesman Frederick Douglass.

  • Dr. Melody Cofield is a philanthropic, entrepreneur, inventor, researcher, author, speaker, and professional coach.

  • Shawn Dunwoody is an artist, director, and producer. He has painted several inspiring murals in underserved neighborhoods of Rochester.

  • Delores Radney is a community artist and educator with over 25 years of experience teaching creativity in the community.
