The 8th Annual Black History Month Art Exhibit:

“Celebrating Black Artists from Around the World;
Past and Present.”

The African / African American Artists are trailblazers who persevered, overcame barriers, created lasting legacies and are continually making important strides in our history. For this, we pay homage to the past, celebrate the present, and pave the way for future African American Artists.
 
The artists included in this Exhibit is the first African American artist to gain international fame; Henry Ossawa Tanner. Also featured in this Exhibit are Artists Jean-Michel Basquait, Photographer; James Van Der Zee, Sculptor; Augusta Savage, and Contemporary Artists; Ange Hillz, Mickalene Thomas, and Kehinde Wiley. Included are South African Artist Ottis Landsberg, Nigerian Artist Moyo Okediji , British ~ Afro Caribbean Artist Sonia Boyce and Ethopian Artist Julie Mehretu.
 
This exhibit will also feature artwork from Artist Louise Shields, Barbadian- Illustrator; Christie Mario and the late Collage Artist; Claude Fergurson.

Black History Month is an integral part of our nation's tradition in which the Gilroy Center for the Arts continue to promote positive examples of the artistic achievements made by Black Americans with an Exhibit all month that reflects on the central roles of Africn American Artists in U.S. History.

Growing up in the San Joaquin Valley during the 1980's, Louise Shields was one in a handful of African-American kids in her predominantly Latino high school.
