Making a Mark on Medicine

In honor of Black History Month, Walden Behavioral Care would like to celebrate some of the Black individuals who have paved the way for more diversity in our healthcare field.

Two trailblazers are:

  • James McCune Smith, MD, the first black American to earn an MD degree and the first black American to own a pharmacy
  • Rebecca Lee Crumpler, MD, the first African American woman to earn an MD degree

These individuals tore down the barriers of racism and prejudice to help other people of color to pursue their dreams of working in medicine.

Mental Health Early Pioneers

As we honor those who continue to inspire our future, we also wish to recognize the contributions of Black Americans’ work in the mental health field.

  • Bebe Moore Campbell, author and advocate for the mental health needs and disparities in black communities; recognized by Congress in 2008 during National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month
  • Mamie Phipps Clark, Ph.D., the first African American woman to earn a doctorate degree in psychology from Columbia University and famously known for her “Doll Study” with her husband, Kenneth Clark Ph.D.

Support Black-Owned Restaurants

As part of Black History Month, we are pleased to announce that Walden will provide food one day this month at each location from a local Black-owned restaurant in your area. Each location will pick the restaurant because supporting Black-owned businesses is a small but important first step.
