Eight Lamar Institute of Technology students were awarded the college’s Black History Month Scholarship for $500 each.
Scholarship recipients included Cierra White, Sharonda Humphries, Jaalah Baaheth, Onitra Lopez, Heather Jones, Farrah McCurley, Lineia Roy and Nyaah Guillory.
LIT’s General Education and Developmental Studies Instructor and BHM Committee member Regina Drake acknowledged the importance for the students.
“This scholarship is significant in so many ways. It is an opportunity to assist students in achieving their dreams,” she said. “Knowing that we have helped to alleviate some of the challenges that many students face in having to pay for college is a very humbling experience.”
LIT recently celebrated Black History Month with a ceremony honoring the recipients. The observance also included Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office Precinct 2 Constable Christopher Bates, who spoke on the importance of voting, while Dr. Freddie Titus led the Psalms 150 Gospel Choir with an inspirational song.
“This occasion is not just limited to honoring Black History Month,” Dr. Howard said. “With trailblazers like (Jefferson County) Sheriff (Zena) Stephens and Constable Bates, they’ve made Texas and American History. LIT is proud to have both of them in our community.”
