A Message from Our Pastor and Teacher
|
Transfiguration Sunday - February 27, 2022 ~ "Spritual Giants: Belle Hooks"
Similar to COVID-19 and as deadly, racism mutates and remains resistant. Structural racism pervades every aspect of society. Dismantling white supremacy, however, is not solely about what we must tear down. We must ask ourselves, what we must build in its place? The ancient texts of The Gospel of Luke and the modern wisdom of bell hooks, a groundbreaking African-American feminist, invite us to imagine a world free of racism, misogyny, and oppression of every kind.

Reflection of the Week from the Racial Justice Team
|
Virginia’s slaveholding elite had grown paranoid. Fears of enslaved people plotting and executing revolts ran rampant, and an alliance between the British and the enslaved men and women who the white colonists already feared would seek every opportunity to slit their throats proved too much. The specter of their most valuable property absconding to take up arms against them “did more than any other British measure to spur uncommitted white Americans into the camp of rebellion” … And yet none of this is part of our founding mythology, which conveniently omits the fact that one of the primary reasons some of the colonists decided to declare their independence from Britain was because they wanted to protect the institution of slavery … For this duplicity–claiming they were fighting for freedom while enslaving a fifth of the people–the Patriots faced burning criticism both at home and abroad.
Excerpt from “The 1619 Project” by Nikole Hannah-Jones, Ch. 1, p. 16.

From the Environmental Justice Team
|
The Migratory Bird Conservation Partnership, including Audubon California, Point Blue Conservation Science, and The Nature Conservancy just released a new StoryMap to demonstrate why the Great Central Valley is key to 30x30 success. Explore the story map now.
What is 30x30? In 2020, Governor Newsom signed a groundbreaking Executive Order to protect 30% of California’s lands and waters by 2030. This goal aims to protect biodiversity, build resilience to climate change, and ensure equitable access to nature for all Californians.

Seekers Begin New Book this Sunday
|
Seekers will move on to "We Walk the Path Together: Learning from Thich Nhat Hanh & Meister Eckhart" next Sunday, February 27th.
If you were unable to attend church last Sunday, I urge you to watch the servicet on YouTube. Jill preached on the "Spiritual Giant: Thich Nhat Hanh" which gave a great overview of his life and teachings. We hope that this sermon may entice new members to join our group.
I'm looking forward to getting back to regular meetings with no further disruptions. See you Sunday.

Sunday Afternoon Mah Jongg!
|
Have you ever wanted to learn to play Mah Jongg? Do you already know how to play? Please join our Sunday Afternoon Mah Jongg group. Players of any skill level are welcome. Claudia Tolar is teaching the basics of the game to all beginners. Johanna Ballard, Heather Abushanab, and Ken Tolar are helping by coaching those who can play, but are not yet experienced. And there will be tables for those who already know and enjoy the game. Mah Jongg is a game that can take a few weeks to learn, but we are confident that anyone can learn to love the game! If you already own a Mah Jongg set or a 2021 playing card(s), please bring them along.
We will gather on the patio when the weather is good and in the fellowship hall when needed. Enjoy a bit of Fellowship hour and then migrate over to play from about 12-2 each Sunday for the next several weeks. After a few weeks, we will decide if we want to make this a regular event. You can come every week or just once in a while.

Silent Retreat - May 12-15
|
Each year a group from RUCC participates in a weekend long silent retreat. Silent retreats help us to slow down, enjoy nature, and listen to the wisdom of the Divine. This year our silent retreat will take place in Los Altos.
When: May 12 – 15
Cost: $495 for three nights with your personal bedroom, personal bathroom, and 3 meals a day.
RUCC has reserved 12 spaces for this Silent Retreat. If you are interested in attending or have questions, please contact Pastor Jill, pastorjill@redlandsucc.org. Scholarships are available.

As we try to re emerge from two years of solitary confinement, working outside in the garden can be a great first step. Plenty of fresh air, people close enough to chat, but not too close so it feels pretty safe. No experience needed. RUCC supplies water, you let us know what you want to plant and help is available to figure out what will work for you.
There will be a couple of garden clean up days to get ready - this Saturday, February 26th, 8:30 to 11 and March 12th 8:00 to 10 and after the Nature Fair depending on weather. Many hands make little work. It's great to grow your own veggies - nothing tastes better than fresh from the garden tomatoes or cucumbers or whatever your favorites are. Please join us! More information - text/call Gretchen 951-533-3606.
