Angela Rodel presents The Case of Cem in conversation with Eric Lorberer
In-Store Event: Sunday, 2/4 @ 7pm - Registration Required
The Case of Cem, Vera Mutafchieva’s celebrated novel of court intrigue, maintains lasting resonance for being a personal exploration of emigration and loss set in the historical era during which the politics of the East and West were sketched out with utter clarity. These early lines of demarcation, as voiced through Christian and Muslim emissaries, greedy leaders, unflinching soldiers, and lyrical poets, have indelibly influenced the world as we know it today.

Ron de Beaulieu presents St. Paul Murder & Mayhem
In-Store Event: Wednesday, 2/7 @ 7pm - Registration Required
Whiskey made the river city a byword for peril. Men brawled over small offenses and killed one another with near impunity. As crime flourished beyond the power of police control, vigilantes patrolled the streets. Irresponsible speculation and white-collar crime wrecked the local economy, devastating families and driving thousands out of town. The remaining St. Paulites rebuilt their community and economy, stimulating immigration, but more people meant more crime. In the 1870s, vice and violence spiraled into the Bloody Fall of '74, and St. Paul regained its reputation as a "dead tough" town.
Historian Ron de Beaulieu reveals the past travails of life in this turbulent city.

John Halter presents Driving Dad Home
In-Store Event: Thursday, 2/8 @ 7pm - Registration Required
In this funny, sad, challenging, and loving saga, author John Halter embarks on a mission to rescue his 96-year-old father, Russ, from an impossible situation in a Phoenix trailer park. Russ, a Depression-era farm boy, World War II Navy veteran, and retired heavy-equipment salesman, doesn’t want to leave, and to make things more difficult still, his short-term memory is fading. As father and son finally hit the road, Halter learns that the best way to coax his dad to cooperate is to get him talking about the past, and their multi-day trip across the western landscape becomes a halting but extended reminiscence about Russ’s childhood and war experiences, the rich family life they shared, and the misunderstandings they found it difficult to overcome.

The third volume is a powerful conclusion to the trilogy and a blockbuster of a novel that can be read as a stand-alone. Cathy Coats presents To Banish Forever
In-Store Event: Wednesday, 2/21 @ 7pm - Registration Required
In 1863, after the end of the US–Dakota War, a group of men in Mankato, Minnesota, formed a secret society. At the beginning of every meeting, members of the Knights of the Forest recited its ritual pledge, including these words: "I sincerely hope this meeting may be profitable to each one of us, and that we may go forth from this Lodge stronger and braver in the determination to banish forever from our beautiful State every Indian who now desecrates our soil."
This is the story of the Knights, the Ho-Chunk, and the ethnic cleansing of southern Minnesota.

Dawn Brockett presents Unrestricted
In-Store Event: Thursday, 2/29 @ 7pm - Registration Required
In Unrestricted, Dawn Brockett refutes the long-standing paradigm that anorexia is about the anorectic’s need to control. Having battled and beaten severe restrictive anorexia herself, she proposes that anorexia is triggered by a lack of the space a young woman needs to fully individuate— to become who she chooses to be without being controlled by others.
