Black Impact Houston Unveils New Framework to Strengthen and Empower Black-Led Nonprofits

Black Impact Houston Unveils New Theory of Change and Strategic Framework to Strengthen and Support Black Nonprofits

Houston, TX, October 3, 2023 — Today, Black Impact Houston (BIH), an alliance of Black-led organizations in the greater Houston area unveiled its first theory of change and strategic framework. This marks a transformative moment in BIH’s mission to support and strengthen the Black-led nonprofit ecosystem through belonging, education, advocacy, mentorship and leadership.

After two years of building culture and identifying needs, Black Impact Houston has synthesized insights from the BIH subcommittees, being participants in the BuildBlackHou planning process (which Black Impact Houston was the grant recipient of the planning process), and looking at capacity building efforts in other cities. These efforts have helped craft a holistic roadmap that will guide the actions of the alliance in the coming years.

"Our new Theory of Change isn't just an evolution of traditional models of capacity building; it's revolutionizing it by centering the unique needs of Black leaders," said Black Impact Houston’s Founder Brandi Brown. "We're not just thinking differently; we're committing to being bold and being US. Our new framework prioritizes building BIH’s infrastructure, and centering the interests of our members with programming that centers the unique experience of Black leaders who also experience injustices as they seek to grow their organizations. The recently released BuildBlackHou findings validated much of what our members have been telling us for the past two years."

Key Highlights of the New Theory of Change and Strategic Framework

The theory of change is to gain equitable opportunities for Black-led organizations in Houston by focusing on Shared Vision + Shared Purpose + Shared Resources. Over the next two years, Black Impact Houston will:

1. Grow Capacity of BIH

2. Provide Technical Assistance to Black-led Organizations

3. Support Infrastructure Building for Black-led Organizations

4. Strengthen Leadership Development

We believe the work of Black Impact Houston will strengthen our local ecosystem of Black-led organizations regardless of organizational size or scope of services. Black-led organizations of all sizes and focus areas are invited to join us in this effort.

As Black Impact Houston moves forward with its approach, it welcomes the support and collaboration of all stakeholders who share its commitment to supporting Black-led organizations.
