We invite educators to join Teaching for Change's D.C. Area Educators for Social Justice for the fifth annual D.C. Area Black Lives Matter at School Week of Action from January 31 – February 4. This local week of action is part of the National Black Lives Matter at School Week of Action and Year of Purpose campaign taking place across the United States.
Black Lives Matter at School Curriculum Fair

On Saturday, January 8, 2022, Teaching for Change will host a virtual curriculum fair featuring workshops, a keynote speaker, and time for educators to learn more about the Black Lives Matter at School Week of Action, taking place January 31 – February 4, 2022.

We will also host a D.C. Area Black Lives Matter Virtual Curriculum Fair focused on D.C. area history on December 11, 2021.
Workshop Proposals

We are currently seeking workshop proposals for the curriculum fair that speak to the Black Lives Matter at School Year of Purpose, centering the 13 Guiding Principles and national demands in the classroom. Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis until Friday, December 10.

Relevant presentations are welcomed, as are curricular ideas, classroom strategies, theoretical frameworks that lead to praxis, presentations on community work, and other ideas for inspiring practice. Workshop sessions will be 45 minutes and held via Zoom. Accepted workshop presenters will receive a small honorarium.

William Dorsey Swann: The First "Queen of Drag"
Born into slavery, William Dorsey Swann was the first known person to identify as a “Queen of Drag” and the first known American activist to lead a queer resistance group. Learn about Swann in this short video from PBS. Swann is also one of the activists featured in Teaching for Change's Resistance 101 lesson.
