Connecting hearts, minds, and hands to meet needs in our community
Black men talking about black men, an event at the Indianapolis Urban League Tuesday, featured a panel of leading African American men in our city who talked frankly about the the socialization and expectations of young black men who grow up in various family, neighborhood, economic, and social settings. They discussed the importance of the expectations and definitions of who they are and how life choices and decisions influence their lives. UNITE INDY works with some of these panel members and they are primary players in the fight for racial and social equality. This powerful event was organized by Citizen 7. Check out Citizen7
UNITE INDY'S Parner of the Month is Chosen
Ministries f ounded by Maria Santiago (left). Chosen Ministries changes lives by assisting impoverished single parents to thrive by teaching life skills, long term mentoring, and by dealing with the three most common barriers to success: The need for child care, a lack of education, and the need for transportation.
Chosen helps with vocational scholarships where possible, and guides clients into areas of their greatest interests and talents. Finally, there is help with resume building, the art of job interviewing and training in financial literacy to help maintain a prosperous and stable life for the client and children. We are proud to partner with Maria and her powerful organization that changes so many lives here in Indy.
UNITE INDY is part of those meeting to fight gun violence in Indianapolis. This steering committee will work with Mayor Hogsett and IMPD Chief Brian Roach to adopt and enact appropriate measures aimed at reducing murders in our city. They are gathering the best available practices for fighting gun violence in use here and across the country. At the same time they welcome all who want to collaborate to make Indianapolis safe for all its citizens. Contact Anthony Beverly of Stop the Violence Indianapolis for more information.
December 6th Serving the Servants brings together Suburban and Urban Pastors!
One of UNITE INDY's happiest achievements is to have hosted urban pastors at a number of meetings where we have had the honor of getting to know them and serve them in some substantial ways. Next month we are inviting suburban pastors to join us for lunch at the Columbia Club, to share a meal with this amazing group of urban Christian leaders, and to simply get to know each other. We cannot just love from afar, and a handshake can be the first step in moving mountains. We'll report on our success! Click here to request information
Pastors are busy. They carry a heavy load, but should there be a time when pastors and their congregations reexamine all they do in the context of the community around them? We talk about the difficulties in our urban areas. We pray for the people, but can we cross the bridge and get to know them?
Read Nancy's Blog, "The Pastor and the Path" it's a simple story of a busy pastor and a the new path we could walk together. Read Nancy's Blog
Don't judge a book by its cover. Our new UNITE INDY headquarters is farther along than it looks. Inside much is happening! There are windows behind the boards, there are drywalled walls and light fixtures. We have a new roof! A furnace is coming this week! Who knows? A special Christmas gift might be that we can occupy our office in time to celebrate Christ's birthday. In the meantime we are working hard even without this important meeting space. Hope we'll see you there soon!
The end of the year looms, but you can still make a difference. Almost 1 out of every 3 children in Indianapolis lives below the poverty level, yet our economy is roaring, and unemployment is at a historic low. But all this good news stops at the lines surrounding many of our inner city neighborhoods. In some neighborhoods of Marion County unemployment exceeds 20%. and poverty remains the overwhelming divider of people.

UNITE INDY is connecting people every day to make a difference for those in our city who live in in perpetual want. It builds bridges of understanding between those who need help and those who can help.
Connecting — UNITE INDY introduces urban pastors and ministry leaders to suburban pastors and business leaders. We also make available—At No Charge—a web-based system that connects churches, businesses, ministries, to charities enabling them to raise volunteers and publicize needed items.
Raising Awareness — Through print, television, and radio UNITE INDY is sharing the needs of our community and celebrating victories.
Serving the Servants — UNITE INDY comes behind urban pastors and ministry leaders by addressing personal and professional needs for these men who work tirelessly in their neighborhoods to care for the needy and bereft.
