Above: Watch video of the organisers of the Black People's day of Action 1981 (Part 1: Political Strategy and Organisation)

March 2nd marks forty years since The Black People’s Day of Action. The historically significant day, in 1981, saw over 20,000 people march across London seeking justice for the victims of the New Cross Fire, which had broken out six weeks prior. The tragic Fire had resulted in the death of thirteen black teenagers on the night, and a further death months later. The Black People’s Day of Action was a clear expression of the black community’s grievances and a protest against racial injustice in Britain.
In this special podcast, members of the Race Today collective reunite to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the march and discuss the political strategy they used when organising the national demonstration. Producer: Bryan Knight & Tamara Howe

Moderator: Kehinde Andrews
(Professor of Black Studies - Birmingham City University)

Feedback on Stan Lee and Marvel's Black history

I just wanted to say that my 12yr old son and I attended the Stan Lee lectures today here from New Orleans, Lousiana, and IT WAS INCREDIBLE! Your team and the speakers delivered a truly incredible educational experience. Our minds were blown and we're both signing up for more! I can't even begin to tell you the gift you gave us both. My son is an avid Marvel nerd and World History geek and how the two were interwoven and the new things we learned, we are both truly grateful and so awestruck. THANK YOU! What a true gift you are as an organization! It's our goal to come do the walks when we can do that again.Much Love Crissy Whalin and Zephyr Cooke @singlemombudgettrave

The 1968 Race Relations Act and the legacy of Black Lawyers

Judge Peter Herbert OBE, founder of the society of Black Lawyers, will review the efficacy and legacy of the 1968 law and present activism

In 1968 the Race Relations Act became only the second law (since 1965) to protect the Black population from discrimination. The law itself was not fully comprehensive and only came into effect due to intense lobbying from the African/Caribbean community. In this talk Judge Peter Herbert OBE, founder of the society of Black Lawyers, will review the efficacy and legacy of the law itself as well as tell the history of Black lawyers who have fought for equality. The talk will cover social/legal activity in housing, employment, policing, education and immigration

Is Britain responsible for America's Race Relations ?

A social and legal review of Britain's colonial legal legacy on present day US law and the impact on those racialised as 'black' and 'white'

While America is seen as a hotbed of racial strife, Britain is often portrayed as a 'green and pleasant land' absent of white supremacy. However many of the rules, laws, and social customs which promoted and sustain US racism were introduced long before America became independent in 1776.
In this wide ranging and detailed talk by Professor Gloria J Browne-Marshall, Civil Rights Attorney, Professor of Constitutional Law at John Jay College (CUNY)and author of 'Race, Law, and American Society: 1607 to Present', we will cover:

  • The legal invention and judicial maintenance of the 'white' people
  • How white privilege is embedded into the 'justice' system
  • How legal precedence reinforces racism
  • African and European solidarity during early colonial times
  • The Bacon rebellion
  • Reasons for the explicit legal interest in 'mixed race' relationships
  • The law and its role in the capitalist exploitation of Black women's body in capitalism
  • Lynchings and legality, ancient and modern
