| Friends and Colleagues, There’s a lot a construction going on in Richmond these days. There are times when I see a new building going up and, frankly, I respond negatively. I say to myself, that is so ugly it is defacing the landscape. My inner voice then reprimands me – “Don’t be such a curmudgeon!” “Why not?” (continuing the inner conversation). “These new developments all look alike. And they’re hideous. Furthermore, they’re all about money!” The inner dialogue sometimes end like this: “That’s my opinion. I’m entitled to it. And I’m sticking with it.” There are other instances where my response is quite different: “That building is really magnificent [or striking] [or beautiful].” “Gosh, look how that fountain changes our perspective of the room.” And so on. These are responses to the built environment. I think we all have them. Sometimes good. Sometimes negative. Some of the books on this list might encourage a similar set of responses. Do they for you? Cheers, Nick | | |
