Confront the Red Scare

Online Class with Historian Dayo Gore

People’s history teachers are being attacked with Red Scare tactics — their names published on lists by right-wing publications, threats of firing, and physical intimidation.

That is why we invited historian Dayo Gore to share stories from history about how to fight back. Join us on Monday, January 23 to learn about Black women radicals active in the revolutionary struggle during the Red Scare. This session is part of our Teach the Black Freedom Struggle online people’s history series.

All sessions are free. ASL interpretation and PD certificates are provided.

Rosa Parks is one of the most well-known women of the 20th century and yet much of what has been taught about her is narrow, limited, and at times wrong. This is changing thanks to the young adult book, The Rebellious Life of Mrs. Rosa Parks and a documentary film with the same title — both based on the Parks’ biography by Jeanne Theoharis.

To facilitate use of the young readers book and documentary film, The Rebellious Life of Mrs. Rosa Parks, we offer a teaching guide, classroom stories, and streaming licenses for the classroom.

Teaching Guide

The Rebellious Life of Mrs. Rosa Parks Teaching Guide is a collection of lessons for middle and high school classrooms based on the book and film. Some of the lessons focus on why Rosa Parks is so widely misunderstood — and what this says about national myths, histories, and memorialization. Others take a deeper dive into a particular event or topic.

Thousands of students are reading the young people’s edition of The Rebellious Life of Mrs. Rosa Parks. Please share your story about how you used the book and/or the film and we will send you more in appreciation.

The 2022 documentary The Rebellious Life of Mrs. Rosa Parks is based on the biography by Jeanne Theoharis.

Thanks to support from Soledad O’Brien Productions and The Ford Foundation, teachers and teacher educators can access free licenses to share the film with their students from January 1 to March 31, 2023.

This offer is for teachers who received copies of the young readers edition of the book, Teaching for Black Lives study group members, teachers who attend the Teach the Black Freedom Struggle classes, and educators using Zinn Education Project people’s history lessons.
