Chicago Bears donate $200K to storm recovery efforts in south suburbs, Northwest Indiana

CHICAGO (WGN) — The Chicago Bears are donating $200,000 to help communities still recovering from severe storms that hit Chicago’s south suburbs and Northwest Indiana on Aug. 11.

The team announced the donation Saturday, with $100,000 going to Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Chicago and another $100,000 to Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Gary.

Black soldiers stage sit-in at Fort Hood

On the morning of August 23, 1968, a group of Black soldiers at Fort Hood, Texas stage one of the largest acts of civil disobedience ever recorded among members of the United States military. Adopting the nonviolent tactics of the civil rights movement, the soldiers stage a sit-in to protest their impending deployment to Chicago to defend the Democratic National Convention from protesters.

August 23, 1968: Forty-Three Black Soldiers Stage Sit-In at Ft. Hood

Late in the evening of Friday, August 23, 1968, five dozen African American troops staged an orderly, nonviolent sit-in at the intersection of 65th Street and Central Avenue at Fort Hood (now called Fort Cavazos). They were protesting the deployment to Chicago for riot-control duty at the Democratic National Convention, which was planned for the following morning.
