Mission Trip

June 13-19, 2026

Sisseton, South Dakota

Join us on a mission trip to Wahpeton Sioux Indian

Reservation in Sisseton, South Dakota. There you and your family can impact the lives of Native American children, a historically disconnected and severely impoverished culture. Over the years we have seen our children grow in their perspective of what poverty is and how it can impact people. It is also an opportunity to share Christ’s love in a

Christian environment- true agape love.

You can learn more about the partnership here: https://chicagopresbytery.org/2025/03/31/dakota-partnership/. A copy of Chicago Presbytery's invite is here.

There is a fun picnic at Roy Lake with our Native American friends, swimming at the Sisseton municipal pool, a tour of the reservation and hike up to the top of Nicolette tower.

We are pleased to share the details below:

When: June 13-19, 2026

Transportation: We will travel together in 15-passenger vans

Accommodations: We stay in a hotel in Sisseton. There are a couple of options:

  • Sharing a hotel room with someone
  • Staying individually in a hotel room
  • A family stays together in one hotel room
  • There are also options for staying in your RV in a RV park, putting up a tent at the church, or sleeping in the church

What do we do there? Our primary ministry is leading Vacation Bible School for approximately 100 children and youth, divided into three age groups: K–4th grade, middle school, and high school. We will also need volunteers to help with meal planning and preparation. If there is sufficient interest, we may also offer a building or repair project.

Who can go? Adults, families (with appropriate supervision for younger children), and junior or senior high youth accompanied by adult supervision are welcome.

Cost (includes transportation, lodging, and meals): Single occupancy room - $500

       Double occupancy room - $300

       Family room - $550

       RV park - $150

    Church - donation

The presbytery will cover 50% of the cost for all participants.

Please share this with your congregation. Reach out to Jeannette (jeannette@blackhawkpresbytgery.org) or Thea (pastor@fpce.org) if you have any questions.

We look forward to partnering with Chicago Presbytery for this meaningful and enriching

mission experience.

Waltham Presbyterian Church Misson Project

In addition to our weekly food and non-food collections for the Illinois Valley Food Pantry in Peru, Illinois, Waltham Presbyterian Church has also shared Easter baskets and greetings with the food pantry for the past 36 years.

Prior to 1991, our youth church school class filled cool whip containers and sand pails to share with the food pantry clients. The project grew as we involved the congregation – collecting gallon milk jugs, removing the labels, and cutting them to look like bunnies. We decorated them with paper pink ears, blue eyes, yarn whiskers and mouth and cotton ball tails and noses. We changed to filling plastic bags for the last several years.

Funds are collected to purchase gifts such as bubbles, sidewalk chalk, jump ropes, play dough, etc. Candy is donated by the congregation to fill the Easter grass filled bags.

Some baskets are shared with our shut-ins thru the Deacons and with our local Veterans home.

This year we filled 300 Easter bags. Even with three years of no records and no distribution during COVID, our records show our total baskets (now bags) is 9,167!

Our prayer is that these gifts bring Easter Joy to all who receive them.

A Call to Do Justice, Love Kindness

and Walk Humbly

The prophet Micah issues a call “to do justice, love kindness and walk humbly with your God.” One Great Hour of Sharing does just that, working for justice around the world with partners who know the needs of their own communities.

One way churches are answering the call is through grassroots organizing, a faith-rooted approach to addressing systemic injustices within local contexts. The PC(USA) has created a new eight-page guide, titled “Congregation-Based Community Organizing (CBCO): A Call to Do Justice, Love Mercy and Walk Humbly.”

The guide notes that CBCO is grounded in the belief that, through deep relationships and faithful witness, faith communities are uniquely equipped to walk alongside frontline communities in the shared pursuit of justice and the common good.

Illinois Secure Choice Program

Some of our churches have asked if they are required to register for the Illinois Secure Choice Program. This is a program meant to provide opportunities for employees of firms in Illinois to save through a retirement plan like a 401(k). Employers are required by law to offer this option unless they already offer a retirement savings plan and there is no exemption for religious organizations.

The good news and short answer is churches in the PC(USA) do not have to register for Secure Choice. We are already able to offer a 403(b) program through a Board of Pensions partnership with Fidelity. Under this partnership all employees of churches, regardless of their position or the number of hours they work, may participate in a voluntary retirement savings program. Please see this link for details. https://www.pensions.org/what-we-offer/retirement/retirement-savings.

A NEXT Church Workshop Series – Spring 2026

CHANGING THE CULTURE OF ASSESSMENT

The traditional metrics of budgets, membership, and attendance are no longer adequate to evaluate success in ministry. Instead of searching for new ways of measuring, we revert to what we know, perpetuating a status quo. But, if what we are doing matters in our lives and in the world, we must develop meaningful ways to measure effectiveness. We need to change the entire culture of assessment. This 3-session workshop series will unpack the concepts of Cultivated Ministry while offering practical ways to begin shifting the culture of assessment in your own context. Each session will be 90 minutes in length and will build on the concepts over the 3 weeks. The workshops will be held over Zoom and will include concept presentation, conversation, and application examples from practitioners already using this resource. Because the workshop is designed for active participation, recordings will only be available for the week following each session in the event a participant must miss a session. The workshops are designed for all church leaders – church members, pastors, educators, elders, and church professionals.

News related to the Board of Pensions of the PC(USA)

From the Board of Pensions (March 9, 2026)

Support for congregations and pastors with children

An additional dues subsidy will be available to congregational pastoral leaders enrolled in the Congregational Pastors Package to help alleviate the cost of dependent child medical coverage. Effective Jan. 1, 2027, the subsidy will cover 50% of the national, community-rated medical coverage cost of dependent children. This subsidy will reduce the flat rates for both the 2027 Child(ren) and Family coverage levels. Using the 2026 dues as an example, the cost of coverage for children is currently $829 per month (approximately $9,950/year). The subsidized monthly amount would be $414.50 (approximately $4,975/year) for Child(ren) and $1,435.50 (approximately $17,226/year) for Family. Congregations may share in the cost of dependent coverage.

Transitional Pastor’s Participation and its inherent subsidies will be extended through 2029, giving congregations and ministers already enrolled in this package two more years to transition to the Congregational Pastors Package. Please know that the Board continues to monitor medical cost trends and will release the 2027 dues for the Congregational Pastors Package and Transitional Pastor’s Participation, including flat rates to cover dependent children, in July to ensure the most accurate rates.

The Medical Plan already provides subsidies for ministers in several ways, including offering dues as a percentage of salary rather than the actual cost of coverage. As stewards of the Benefits Plan, we balance rising healthcare costs with annual dues and reserves so that the plan remains financially stable. This article describes in more detail how we do that:

A new grant to support ministers with child care needs

Child Care Support is a new grant available through the Assistance Program that offsets a portion of child care needs for children ages 0-6 years. The initial pilot phase of this grant, effective April 1, 2026, will provide $500 per month per child and up to $1,500 per month per family. This grant supports ministers of the Word and Sacrament and commissioned pastors employed by PC(USA) congregations whose effective salary is $56,880 or less and who meet other eligibility requirements.

Additional Medical Plan options coming in 2027

Beginning Jan. 1, 2027, the Board of Pensions will offer three additional Medical Plan options for lay members and non-installed ministers who are not enrolled in the Congregational Pastors Package or Transitional Pastor’s Participation. The three additional options include a second PPO, second EPO, and second HDHP and will have the same features as the existing options with different out-of-pocket costs. More details will be available in the summer. Ministers and dependents enrolled in the Congregational Pastors Package or Transitional Pastor’s Participation will continue to be offered the Board’s current PPO option.

You can read about outcomes from the March Board of Directors meeting, including the experience apportionment for the Defined Benefit Pension Plan, on our website (www.pensions.org)

The First Hymn

Acclaimed composers Chris Tomlin and Ben Fielding reimagine an ancient hymn as a contemporary worship piece in the feature-length documentary, The First Hymn. Hosted by Australian historian John Dickson, the film follows the hymn’s journey from its desert origins to its modern revival, culminating in a live worship concert.

The journey begins in the ancient ruins of Oxyrhynchus, Egypt, when archaeologists unearthed a papyrus scrap containing the earliest known Christian hymn, complete with both its lyrics and musical notation. Analyzed at Oxford University, the discovery challenges traditional views of church history by revealing the rich musical practices of early believers.

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY!

He is Risen....

Risen Christ,

On the upcoming morning we rejoice in the good news of the empty tomb.

You have broken the power of death and brought forth new life for all creation.

Fill our hearts with the joy of the resurrection and the hope that comes from your victory over the grave.

Lord, renew our spirits as the dawn of Easter reminds us that light overcomes darkness and love is stronger than fear.

Help us to live as people of the resurrection—sharing kindness, offering forgiveness, and carrying your peace into a world that longs for healing.

Be with those who are grieving, lonely, or burdened today.

Let the promise of new life bring comfort and strength to all who are struggling.

May the power that raised you from the dead renew our faith and guide us to walk faithfully in your ways.

We give you thanks for your endless grace, your redeeming love, and the hope we have through you.

May the joy of Easter remain in our hearts today and always.

In the name of the Risen Christ we pray,

Amen.

Each month we are taking the time to pray for our churches and pastors throughout the year. Please take a moment each week to lift up those listed in prayer.

Our Vision and Values

Grounded in the biblical image for human community, as disciples of our Lord Jesus Christ, we challenge and support congregations to be thriving faith communities by facilitating competent leadership and resourcing to energize ministry and mission.

As Christians, guided by the principles of love, trust, open communication, and genuine relationships, we value each other as sisters and brothers in faith in all our varied theological understandings. Therefore, we relish respectful discussions of differing opinions as a necessary part of discerning the will of God.
