IRS extends relief to farmers and ranchers impacted by drought in 41 states, other regions


WASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service today issued guidance providing tax relief for farmers and ranchers in applicable regions forced to sell or exchange livestock because of drought conditions.

Under the guidance, farmers and ranchers may have an extended period of time to replace their livestock and defer tax on any gains from the forced sales or exchanges.

Taxpayers impacted by the terrorist attacks in Israel qualify for tax relief; Oct. 16 filing deadline, other dates postponed to Oct. 7, 2024


WASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service today announced tax relief for individuals and businesses affected by the terrorist attacks in the State of Israel. These taxpayers now have until Oct. 7, 2024, to file various federal returns, make tax payments and perform other time-sensitive tax-related actions.

IRS provides relief for Helene; various deadlines postponed to May 1, 2025; part or all of 7 states qualify


WASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service today announced disaster tax relief for all individuals and businesses affected by Hurricane Helene, including the entire states of Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina and parts of Florida, Tennessee and Virginia.

Taxpayers in these areas now have until May 1, 2025, to file various federal individual and business tax returns and make tax payments. Among other things, this includes 2024 individual and business returns normally due during March and April 2025, 2023 individual and corporate returns with valid extensions and quarterly estimated tax payments.

Volunteer Service Project: Sacred Heart Memorial Gardens Restoration


A community workday is scheduled for October 5 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Sacred Heart Memorial Gardens on Gills Bridge Road in Dinwiddie County, near Fort Barfoot. Volunteers will help clear downed trees, clean grave sites, and remove debris.


Participants should wear heavy clothing, gloves, and hats, and bring their own tools. Food and drinks will be provided.

Annual Fall Festival Set for October 19 in Blackstone


Heritage Hall will host its annual Fall Festival on October 19 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 900 South Main St. The event promises a day of family fun and community spirit.


This year’s festival will feature a variety of attractions, including delicious food vendors, a bounce house for kids, and a hearty stew to warm attendees. In addition to the festivities, the event will raise money for the Alzheimer’s Walk, highlighting the community’s commitment to supporting important causes.
