We'll just come out and say it: We're really proud to be the only homegrown, long-form fiction publishing company in St. Louis that discovers, nurtures, and promotes authors exclusively from the greater St. Louis area. It's been a year since we decided to stop brainstorming and actually start something, and here we are. We have two fantastic, talented authors who are incredibly invested in their craft. And not just that--we're so fortunate to have found two authors who truly believe in their books. They didn't just hand us their books and walk away--they're actively invested in letting the world know about their novels and about Blank Slate Press.

If you're that type of author, we want to consider you for our 2011 selection (apply here by March 15). If you want to support that type of author, help us spread the word about our first title: Fred Venturini's debut novel The Samaritan. And let the rest of the world know that there can be amazing publishing companies right here in the Midwest. Here's how you can help:
  1. Forward this e-mail to the people with whom you most often talk about books. (For example, everyone in your book club.)
  2.  Like Fred Venturini's author page on Facebook and follow Blank Slate Press on Facebook.
  3. Follow @askmacktucker (a rather crude character in The Samaritan who will grow on you) on Twitter. Or follow @blankslatepress to learn about publishing and writing.
  4. Call your local Barnes & Noble or Borders (or both! See phone numbers at the end of this e-mail) and ask if they will stock The Samaritan. We're hoping that all of the amazing independent bookstores in the area will carry it too, so if you have a bookstore you frequent, give them a call. (The book will also be available through about 50 online bookstores, including Amazon, B&N, Borders, Apple, and Google eBooks.) Booksellers need to hear from you if they're going to decide to put Blank Slate Press's books on their shelves.
  5. Call your local library (city libraries here) and ask if they carry The Samaritan (numbers below)
  6. Sign up to give blood and/or register as an organ donor. Why? You'll have to read the book to find out.
What do you get from doing all this (other than the satisfaction that you just made a huge difference)? For each one of those above items that you do, we'll enter you in a drawing for either an iPod shuffle filled with a playlist for the main characters in The Samaritan, a signed first-edition hardcover copy of the book, a paperback copy of the book, and a digital copy (we'll draw four winners). You get one entry per item completed, including one copy for each bookstore or library number you call. If you complete the entire list, we'll throw in two extra prize entries for free. Just reply to this e-mail by February 28 and tell us which items on the list you completed. If we hear back from enough people, we'll throw in extra prizes. We're cool like that.

Before we get to the list of local chain bookstores, we have a few advance reader copies (ARCs) of our other upcoming debut, Anene Tressler's novel Dancing with Gravity. If you'd like a copy and are willing to review it on Facebook, your blog, Goodreads, or Amazon, please let us know and we'd be happy to send you a copy.
