Bank of America volunteer recalls foster care experience

These Chicago-area Bank of America employees got together in December to make blankets for

children served by the SOS Children's Village located nearby,

We were touched to learn that, during a Bank of America blanket making event in Illinois, one of the volunteers told her co-workers that she was in the foster care system when she was a child and felt a deep connection to Jessica Rudolph’s TEDx talk, played at the beginning of the session.

The volunteer confirmed that her story happened exactly as Jessica described, with the school just sending her home to a different family one day. She even remembers receiving a handmade gift from a volunteer just like us, although hers was not a blanket, but a crocheted teddy bear. She remembers that bear fondly to this day.

Her story had a happy ending, a reunion with her family after many months in foster care, but we know that not all kids get to have that reunion. She felt very proud to be part of our event and make a blanket for a child just like her. Please know that your time at blanket-making events really does make a difference!

A Thank You from a caseworker...

I am a foster care case manager. Recently my congregation did a blanket making activity for your organization and made 32 blankets. I have already given 3 of them out to very thankful kiddos! One of those is a 6 month old little boy. Every week when I pick him up to visit mom, he has his blanket with him!

I didn’t realize how much such a simple thing meant until I started working in the foster care world. I am so thankful to have found your organization so the ladies at my church could help make these for the new kids on my caseload.

Quilt groups celebrate 2023 achievements

Licking Valley Quilters. Mary from Licking Valley Quilters reported that her group made and donated 192 quilts in 2023 to MVOB among other organizations. Mary told us, “At the December meeting they couldn’t believe the number!” We love to think about their beautiful quilts in the hands of young people living in foster care.

Todd Family & Friend Quilters. With a final donation in December, Donna, Ann, Wilma and Diane have completed 500 quilts for MVOB since the middle of 2017. Their commitment to MVOB goes back even farther. Donna remembered, “Diane, mom (Wilma) and I were introduced to MVOB at church in June 2011. In that first six months we donated 70 quilt tops and, by the end of 2015, had donated a total of 590 quilt tops. In 2016, we started doing full quilts and donated about 100 before Ann joined our team in mid 2017. We have now reached 500 quilts!” We are very grateful for the dedication of these four faithful quilters.

Blanket Angel Snapshots

The engagement team from ICS-Cencora in Lockbourne, Ohio held a bake sale in December and raised enough money to purchase 26 fleece blanket kits. They got together to make the blankets and donated them to United Methodist Children’s Home Family Services (see photo). Many thanks to these Blanket Angels for giving back to their community.

The Warhawks Youth Basketball Association sixth grade players and cheerleaders in Westerville, Ohio held a blanket-making event in January. They made 25 blankets for A New Leaf, a local foster care agency. Lori, a foster Mom who attended the event, fosters 3 children from A New Leaf. All of them came to her with a blanket from MVOB!
