The
"thin blue line" covered by the
blood of Christ.
|
Last week was a tough one for me as we memorialized a slain officer I knew personally (PCSO Dep.
Nate Carrigan) and I have been very busy on the ministry side pursuant to same. With this in mind, and with the slaughter of our own continuing at a horrendous rate, this week's Bible study/devo is designed to bring a difficult but all-imporant understanding for the "
Code 3" sense of urgency all believers MUST have to share Christ with our own. Scroll down to "
Blessed are the Peacekeepers?".
Speaking of a genuine peacemaker (read the study) boldly stepping out in faith: In 2014, Aurora (CO) P.D. Officer
Ryan Burns
was shot and critically wounded in a LOD shooting. Here last week, Ryan, still recovering from his wounds, spoke at his shooter's sentencing hearing where he courageously shared both the plan of salvation (the Gospel) and our
Romans 13:1-4
commission in an incredibly powerful way. APD's
Chief Metz's comments are worth hearing as well (wow -- a chief that backs his troops -- what a concept). Please take the time to listen and then pass it on! Ryan begins speaking at the 17:30 mark:
Officer Ryan Burns
.
Also in this same vein, Passion Week and the promise and hope of Easter is upon us and we're looking forward to getting together this Thursday for our annual Centurion/FCPO-Denver Easter fellowship and Bible study (details below). As always, I'll post the recap of our study in next week's edition for our national and international readers -- stay tuned.
Speaking of these newsletters/Bible studies, here's the updated version of last week's very well-received edition if you missed it (and don't forget I always repost them on our website and social media pages):
Satan Loves Cops. Let's be sure to pass these on to others in keeping with our mandatory
Great Commission "call for service."
Finally, if you're going to be in the Denver metro area this coming weekend and are not planted in a local fellowship, we'd love it if you would join us at
Calvary Aurora for our Resurrection Weekend services. Regardless, Diana and I wish all you a blessed Easter!

RESOURCES
(1) Police suicide is a subject we deal with here on a regular basis (and preventing law enforcement suicides is a big part of our ministry). Accordingly, we want to again remind you of the
police suicide prevention resource links on our website and ask you to pass them on to others.
(2) With
Easter rapidly approaching, now is great time to examine the
EVIDENCE (cops should be all about the evidence) for Jesus' death and resurrection. Accordingly, take the time to read fellow detective
J. Warner Wallace's articles on the subject along with a wealth of other resources:
Cold Case Christianity.
(3) Great 21 minute, evidence-based video from award-winning author Lee Strobel: "
A Case for Easter."
PRAYER REQUESTS
(1) Please pray for NM DPS Sgt. Lee Mullen's wife Karen who has been hospitalized with a serious medical condition.
(2) Pray for the men and women of the Bismarck Police Department who have lost one of their own to suicide. Pray also for this troubled officer's family. See the resources section for more.
(3) It has been difficult to keep up with our LODD and injuries this year. Please take the time to pray for the families and colleagues of our fallen (and of course be sharing the Gospel with your own): Officer Down Memorial Page.
(4) Pray for your lost colleagues and family members...then be bold and loving enough to invite them to church this weekend.
UPCOMING EVENTS & ANNOUNCEMENTS
(1) The 2016
Sheepdog Seminars for Churches
event calendar is up! Go to
Sheepdog Seminars for Churches
and click on the "

" button. This is great training for cops, military and civilian sheepdogs alike. Moreover, Jimmy Meeks is partnering with us (FCPO) in a number of chapter locations, including here in Colorado this June. See FCPO and Sheepdog Safety Training for more! Our prayer is that we will have many "Divine appointments" to share the Gospel with a captive audience while also building their sheepdog/servant-warrior ethos.
(2) We (Centurion and FCPO) will once again be taking part in Police Week activities in Washington, DC with a Code-3 sense of urgency to share the hope we have in Christ with our own. We'll have our tent(s) set up in Tent City from May 12-15 and the
RISE Christian Law Enforcement Conference is set for Monday,
May 16th. Stop by/join us if you're coming but please pray for us regardless.
(3)
The 2016
"Breaching the Barricade" Law Enforcement Conference
is set for September 30th in Elkhart, IN.
Lt. Gen. Jerry Boykin
will be one of the keynote speakers (not to be missed)! In addition, the 22nd Annual Law Enforcement Appreciation Day event will be held the following day. Click on National Peace Officers Appreciation Week for full details (links to the events at the bottom). Join us.

LAW ENFORCEMENT BIBLE STUDY
Blessed are the Peacekeepers?
In this week's study we're going to take a fresh look at some of the most misquoted passages in Scripture that are wrongly applied to our God-ordained profession of law enforcement (including but not limited to
Matthew 5:9 in which Jesus says, "
Blessed are the peacemakers, for they call be called the sons of God
.").
Please understand my focus here: we are under attack (at war) at a horrendous rate. Worse, the vast majority of those serving in our God-ordained profession do so without a saving faith in Jesus Christ while clinging to a dangerous, false hope that their service as LEOs will somehow save them. Part of this false theology involves taking certain biblical passages out of context and misapplying them to the law enforcement profession. Accordingly, my purpose here is to shine a powerful "takedown" light of clarity on this subject.
First off, the biblical word "peacemaker" is often misquoted in law enforcement and military circles as "peacekeeper" (NOT in the Bible) and has resulted in all kinds of websites, shirts, coins and even whole "ministries" that have no biblical foundation.
Folks, this passage has NOTHING to do with cops! Rather,
Jesus' "Sermon on the Mount" (the Beatitudes) was directed at believers (His followers -- whom subsequently called "Christians") on a theme of true righteousness.
Let's break it down:
The Greek word translated "
peacemaker" is used in only one other place in the New Testament and in a slightly different form.
Colossians 1:20 says, "
For it was the Father's good pleasure for all the fullness to dwell in Him, and through Him to reconcile all things to Himself, having made peace through the blood of His cross." Moreover, the Greek word for p
eacemaker --
iseirenopois
-- means just that -- PEACEMAKER. Taken in context with the rest of Scripture, the
Matthew 5:9
"peacemaker" is NOT a picture of today's "peace officer" (police, peacekeeper, etc.) but rather refers to believers who have been changed and redeemed (born again) into a life-changing/life-saving personal relationship with God in Christ and are therefore themselves "at peace" with God. In short, the police officer is not a saved peacemaker until they have repented and received the eternal peace that comes only from being born again into a personal relationship (not "religion") with Christ.
Jesus -- the ultimately "peacemaker" -- laid down His life on the cross to make peace between God and sinners, and when we can carry that message of peace to others, we are the peacemakers He refers to. Those who give of themselves as Jesus did in order to lead others to repentance and salvation are called "blessed." Again, there is no real peace apart from a live-saving/life-changing personal relationship with God in Christ (
Romans 5:1
--
Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ).
Isaiah 48:22 adds, "'
There is no peace,' says the LORD, 'for the wicked.'" Who are the "wicked" and unrighteous? Speaking under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit (and in turn quoting the Old Testiment), Paul explains this includes EVERYONE outside of a genuine saving faith in Christ (
Romans 3:10).
Accordingly, it is clear that only the "
children of God" -- true born again believers -- can be used by the Holy Spirit to bring the peace of
knowing Christ as Lord and Savior
to others.
Those who witness for Christ, share their faith and serve others in His name are the ambassadors for peace ("peacemakers") this verse identifies.
Can a peacekeeper (cop) also be the "peacemaker" Jesus is speaking of? Of course -- but it has nothing to do with law enforcement unless we are living and sharing the Gospel with others in the course of our duties. One powerful example is this was that of Fairfax County (VA) police detectives Mike "Mo" Motafches and Vicky Armel. Mo boldly stepped out in faith and was used to lead Vicky to a saving faith in Christ. In turn, after Vicky was killed in the line of duty, her recorded testimony was played at her funeral and others have come to repentance and salvation because of it. As such, both Mo and Vicky are in fact the "blessed peacemakers" of Matthew 5:9. I can't encourage you enough to listen to their testimonies in Honoring Vicky Armel.
LAPD officer-turned-minister Bill Rhetts does a terrific job with this issue and was invaluable in helping me prepare for this message. He also has an excellent 9-minute video that sums it nicely: see Blessed are the peacemakers" is not about cops!.
Hopefully, you'll add this to your "duty belt" so that you can lovingly respond the next time you see this passage misquoted.
So being out of luck with the whole "blessed are the peacekeepers" misapplication, how about "Greater love has no man than this, that he lay down his life for his friends." (John 15:3)? Not about cops either (another great exegesis from Bill Rhetts).
Finally, we come to "RIP" (Rest In Peace"). Again, God is clear that eternal rest is found ONLY in a right relationship with God in Christ (no "other" way).
What about just being a "good person"? Sadly, a great many continue to falsely believe that "everyone gets to go to heaven" so long as we're "good" (as one misguided officer once angrily told me that everyone is "good" enough for heaven so long as they are not "a Stalin or Hitler"). But what does God say (ultimately the only position that matters)? Please, take the "police good person test" and see how you do (just as we have to test to become peace officers, God has a test for us as well).
Folks, my purpose in sharing these truths is not to be "mean" but rather to provide life-saving (the eternal kind) "backup" in helping you understand that your eternal destination depends on examining the EVIDENCE and choosing
the ONLY way we can be saved (the narrow, tough way vs. the easy, wide way --
Matthew 7:13-14).
The need is great and the situation dire -- join me in spreading the Word!
So how then can YOU be at peace with God and be the blessed, righteous peacemaker he has called you to be? To ultimately "RIP"? Again, Jesus Christ himslf tells us that you MUST
REPENT
and be
born again
in Him (no "other" way).
Hopefully, this clears up any further confusion -- don't forget to pass it on!
