Stewardship:

Our Honest Relationship with Money

A few weeks ago we heard the parable of the dishonest steward (Luke 16:1-13); it is perhaps the most confusing one we encounter in the Gospels. This parable invites us to reflect on our relationship with our material resources, through the characters of the wealthy master and the dishonest manager. Although not explicitly stated, we can imagine that the wealthy master may be using his wealth and position to exploit the illiterate masses, and that the dishonest manager has been swindling the master for personal gain. Here are two people who do not have healthy relationships with money!

Let’s explore the actions of the dishonest manager a little bit more. The manager’s devotion to money at the expense of relationships has led to his imminent downfall. He cannot undo what has already been done; instead, he chooses to seek right relationship with his neighbors by reducing the debt they owe.

Perhaps his path toward forgiveness and reconciliation earns him the unexpected respect of his master.

Our relationship with money is fraught. We need it to survive. Sadly, it is often used as a tool of oppression and corruption. Disagreements over its use can fracture relationships. The desire to pursue worldly goods can become all consuming. Rather than using money and loving people, we get it backwards: loving money and using people, as St. Augustine once said.

The practice of Christian stewardship can help us reimagine our relationship with money. As stewards, we are charged with the care of things that do not belong to us. Acknowledging God as the source of all that we have, we are called to right relationship with our material wealth as a tool for good rather than the object of admiration. The frame of reference that “our money isn’t really ours” helps to put some healthy distance between us and our money. Jesus leaves us with this thought. “If you have not been faithful with what belongs to another, who will give you what is your own? You cannot serve God and wealth.”

Reflections from the Rector

Francis: A Song for Creation

My first St. Francis Day celebration was at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in NYC. The service took several hours with music performed by jazz saxophonist Paul Winter, liturgical dancers representing the earth and its seasons, and the jaw-dropping parade of animals. You truly have not experience church until you see fish bowls of algae processing down the aisle ahead of women wearing snakes like they were feather boas, ahead of elephants and giraffes!

Saint Francis is perhaps best known for his affinity with all creation. Francis cared for nature and animals because, in them, he saw God reflected there, the God who created everything and named it “good.” He understood that our life is closely bound with the create world and its creatures, and even named that relationship with familial words. In fact, Francis wrote the first poem in Italian, "The Canticle of Brother Sun" in which he praises the beauty of creation.

This Sunday we will honor God in creation in several ways as we lift up Saint Francis (October 4th is his feast day).

  • Bring in a photo or toy of a beloved pet and place on our St. Francis altar in church.
  • At our 10:00 service, we'll open with a procession honoring all of creation - kids are encouraged to join us with their pets or stuffed animals!
  • At 11:15, I will lead a walk down to our 300+ year old white oak tree, following our new 'cemetery path,' along which the Green Team has planted a dozen trees. Rides may be available for those who need them.
  • Bring your furry family members at 5pm for a Pet Blessing on our patio.

I hope to see you at our St. Francis celebrations!

Blessings,

Rev Jill
