REVISED COMMON LECTIONARY NOTES

" John addresses his audience in terms that few preachers would dare use today. He addresses them as a brood of vipers (!) that are fleeing from their coming, deserved judgment as serpents slithering ahead of a grass fire. Their boasts about being descendants of Abraham are meaningless. If they do not repent, if they do not change their whole way of thinking and living, they will be cut down as a useless tree. They are to share their clothing and food with the needy. The “money boys” (tax collectors) are to be scrupulously honest. The “military boys” are to be satisfied with their wages and must never to resort to lies or threats to extract money from people. Is it not true that little has changed in our world, and that today’s humanity needs to hear John’s message as much as the people of his day did? ”

A PRAYER TO SHARE
Dear Jesus, our eternal Lord and loving Brother, inspire our minds, hearts, and lives to grow in our understanding of how wonderful, but how different, is the Kingdom You came to establish. Open our hearts and minds to hear and heed Your call to live as Your apprentices in all we think, say, and do. We pray for the spiritual and political leaders of our troubled world. Use us to make known the only meaningful peace plan for humanity, which You showed with Your life. In Your loving name we pray. Amen. (From Road to Coronation leader's manual)
