Raising Children in Yiddish 

Join us for a Zoom panel with well-known activists working for, or experienced in, this area:

Gitl Schaechter-Viswanath, Yankl-Peretz Blum, Eli Benedict, Ethel Niborski, Naftali Ejdelman

We will talk about raising children in Yiddish from several perspectives. In addition to discussing past and present Jewish day-care centers and schools, we will look at the options available today and the demand or need for such institutions; the importance of maintaining up-to-date terminological lists, children's books and programs to educate children in Yiddish; and the approach of former Haredim to child-rearing in Yiddish. We will also relate our own stories and share our practices and solutions.

(The conversation will be in Yiddish.)

 The Beginning of Literature in Yiddish

We invite you to listen to this conversation (in Yiddish) between Eli Benedict and 

Prof. Simon Neuberg

Hear about the early development of Yiddish literature; the various theories regarding the origin of our language; and the first Yiddish texts that we have. We will also talk about Alt (Old) Yiddish versus Mitl (Middle) Yiddish; the different types of texts, books, writers, readers, and print shops which existed in that era.

Prof. Simon Neuberg, a Frenchman born in Morocco, teaches Yiddish at the University of Trier, Germany. He researches the history of the Jewish language and literature (his book "Epidemics in the Mirror of Older Jewish Texts" was published in 2021 in German.) He has published articles in Yiddish, English, German and French, and collaborated on various dictionaries of modern Yiddish.
