‎דובֿ־בער קערלער (באָריס קאַרלאָוו) איז געבוירן געוואָרן אין מאָסקווע (1958). ער האָט שטודירט‫ לינגוויסטיק און פֿילאָלאָגיע אין העברעיִשן אוניווערסיטעט און אָקספֿאָרד. זינט 2001 פֿירט ער אָן די קאַטעדרע פֿאַר ייִדיש־לימודים אין אינדיאַנע־אוניווערסיטעט. ער האָט אָנגעפֿירט מיטן אַהיים־פּראָיעקט וואָס האָט געשאַפֿן אינטערוויוען אויף ייִדיש מיט דעם עלטערן דור ייִדן אין מיזרח־אייראָפּע. ער האָט ביז איצט געשריבן און רעדאַקטירט, אויף ייִדיש און אויף ענגליש, איבער 13 פֿאָרשביכער, דערציילונגען, אָדער פּאָעזיע־ביכער, אַנטאָלאָגיעס, און צײַטשריפֿטן.

We will talk about the development of the modern Yiddish literary language – what it means, when and where it developed – and take a look at some early Yiddish books. We will also discuss Kerler's own history, including the evolution of his own writing.

Dov-Ber Kerler (Boris Karlov) was born in Moscow in 1958. He studied linguistics and philology at both Hebrew University and Oxford. Since 2001, he has headed the department of Jewish Studies at Indiana University. He led the Aheym Project, which recorded interviews in Yiddish with the older generation of Jews in Eastern Europe. So far he has written and edited, in Yiddish and English, over 13 research books, stories, or poetry books, anthologies, and periodicals.

 The Klezmer tradition in Israel

We invite you to listen to this conversation (in Yiddish) between Eli Benedict and 

Avrum-Leib Burstein

Hear about the Jerusalem and Miron klezmer tradition; the influence of Hasidic tunes on the klezmer world; the place of klezmer music in the Hasidic world, and in the Breslov community in particular. We also discuss Burstein’s own history; how he established a new generation of klezmers; his activities with “Yung Yidish”; his recordings; and his work as an actor, both on Shtisel and in other films.

Avrom-Leib Burstein was born in Jerusalem to a Breslov Hasidic family. He is an actor and musician, playing klezmer music on several instruments. He works to maintain the authentic Breslov music tradition, and deepen and revive the old klezmer tradition among the Hasidim. Over the years, he has released many music CDs, music books and films. He held concerts around the world, and founded the Jerusalem Klezmer Association and Burstein's Klezmer Basement.
