Dr. Yaad Biran

We will talk about Yiddish creativity and writers in Israel, especially in Tel Aviv, and about the status of Yiddish versus Hebrew historically and now. We will also discuss Yiddish in Tel Aviv today, including  Dr. Biran’s work as a Yiddish tour guide and  creator of Yiddish cabarets.

Dr. Yaad Biran was born in 1976. His doctorate deals with the travels of Yiddish writers to Israel. He taught Yiddish language and literature at Haifa, Tel Aviv and Hebrew Universities, as well as Yivo and Beit Shalom Aleichem. He authored a book of stories in Hebrew Litskhok im Letaot (Laughing with Lizards), with Yiddish as the main motif . His series of Yiddish cabarets, Esther's Cabaret, has been performed throughout Israel. Biran is also a creator of the Yiddish in the Streets tour project, in which he guides tours following Yiddish culture in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem.

דובֿ‫־בער קערלער (באָריס קאַרלאָוו) איז געבוירן געוואָרן אין מאָסקווע (1958). ער האָט שטודירט לינגוויסטיק און פֿילאָלאָגיע אין העברעיִשן און אָקספֿאָרד אוניווערסיטעט. זינט 2001 פֿירט ער אָן די קאַטעדרע פֿאַר ייִדיש־לימודים אין אינדיאַנע-אוניווערסיטעט. ער האָט אָנגעפֿירט מיטן אַהיים־פּראָיעקט וואָס האָט געשאַפֿן אינטערוויוען אויף ייִדיש מיט דעם עלטערן דור ייִדן אין מיזרח־אייראָפּע. ער האָט ביז איצט געשריבן און רעדאַקטירט, אויף ייִדיש און אויף ענגליש, איבער 13 פֿאָרשביכער, דערציילונגען, אָדער פּאָעזיע־ביכער, אַנטאָלאָגיעס, און צײַטשריפֿטן.

Dov-Ber Kerler (Boris Karlov) was born in Moscow in 1958. He studied linguistics and philology at both Hebrew University and Oxford. Since 2001, he has headed the department of Jewish Studies at Indiana University. He led the Aheym Project, which recorded interviews in Yiddish with the older generation of Jews in Eastern Europe. So far he has written and edited, in Yiddish and English, over 13 research books, stories, or poetry books, anthologies, and periodicals.
