די געשיכטע פֿונעם אַרבעטער־רינג אין מאָנטרעאָל

מ‫ער ווי אַ יאָרהונדערט לאַנג האָט דער אַרבעטער־רינג געשפּילט אַ וויכטיקע ראָלע אין דעם ייִדישן לעבן פֿון מאָנטרעאָל. די אָרגאַניזאַציע איז געווען איינע פֿון די וויכטיקסטע וועלטלעכע ייִדישע כּוחות אין דער שטאָט און האָט אין משך פֿון לאַנגע יאָרן אַנטוויקלט אַ רײַך קולטור־ און געזעלשאַפֿטלעך לעבן.

‫א‫ין אונדזער קומעדיקן זומישן שמועס וועלן מיר זיך באַקענען מיט דעם יחיד וואָס האָט אָנגעפֿירט דעם אַרבעטער־רינג אין מאָנטרעאָל אין אירע לעצטע יאָרן:

א‫ין די ערשטע יאָרן פֿונעם צוואַנציקסטן יאָרהונדערט זענען געווען אַ ריי אַרבעטער־רינג-„ברענטשעס“, וואָס האָבן געפֿירט אַ רײַכע קולטור־אַרבעט: געפֿירט שולן, טעאַטער־טרופּעס און כאָרן, און אָרגאַניזירט אַ סך אַנדערע קולטור־אַקטיוויטעטן. במשך די יאָרן האָבן זיך די „ברענטשעס“ צו ביסלעך פֿאַרמאַכט, און די פֿאַרבליבענע אַקטיוויטעטן האָבן זיך צונויפֿגעקליבן אין איין הויז. אין דעם לעצטן יאָר האָט זיך אויך דאָס הויז פֿאַרמאַכט. מיט דעם האָט זיך געענדיקט אַ לאַנגער קאַפּיטל אין דער געשיכטע פֿון דעם אַרבעטער־רינג אין מאָנטרעאָל. אין אונדזער שמועס וועט שאול עדלשטיין דערציילן וועגן די „ברענטשעס“, וועגן דעם לעבן און די אויפֿטוען וואָס האָבן זיך געפֿירט אין דעם הויז, און וועגן זײַנע אייגענע איבערלעבונגען אין די לעצטע יאָרן פֿון דער אָרגאַניזאַציע.

The History of the Workmen’s Circle in Montreal

‪For more than a century, the Workmen’s Circle played an important role in Jewish life in Montreal. The organization was one of the most important secular Jewish forces in the city and for many years fostered a rich cultural and communal life.

In our upcoming Zoom conversation (in Yiddish), we will meet the individual who led the Workmen’s Circle in Montreal in its final years:

In the early years of the twentieth century there were a number of Workmen’s Circle branches. These branches carried out a rich cultural program: they ran schools, theater troupes, choirs, and organized many other cultural activities. Over the years the branches gradually closed, and the remaining activities came together in one house. In the past year the house itself also closed. With that, a long chapter in the history of the Workmen’s Circle in Montreal came to an end. In our conversation, Shaul Edelstein will speak about the branches, about the life and activities that took place in that house, and about his own experiences in the final years of the organization.
