אַה‫רן נאַדלער איז אַ היסטאָריקער און פֿאָרשער פֿון רבנישער טראַדיציע און מאָדערנעם ייִדישן געדאַנק, און אַ געוועזענער פּראָפֿעסאָר אין דרו־אוניווערסיטעט. ער האָט געקראָגן אָרטאָדאָקסישע סמיכה, און געדינט ווי דער רבֿ אין קהילות אין באָסטאָן און מאָנטרעאָל, איידער ער האָט זיך איבערגעגעבן דער אַקאַדעמישער וועלט. פֿון 1991 ביז 1998 האָט ער געדינט ווי דער פֿאָרש־דירעקטאָר און דעקאַן פֿונעם מאַקס ווײַנרײַך־צענטער בײַם ייִדישן וויסנשאַפֿטלעכן אינסטיטוט – ייִוואָ אין ניו־יאָרק, וווּ ער האָט געפֿירט דאָס געראַנגל צוריקצוברענגען די ייִדישע אַרכיוון פֿון ווילנע און פֿאַרשטאַרקן דעם ייִוואָס פֿאַרבינדונג מיט ייִדיש־קולטור. ער איז אַ באַקאַנטער שרײַבער און האָט אַרויסגעגעבן אַ ריי אַרטיקלען און ביכער וועגן חסידות, מתנגדים, און דער באַציִונג צווישן רעליגיע, פּאָליטיק און מאָדערניזם.

א‫ין דעם אינטערוויו וועלן מיר זיך אומקערן צו זײַנע יאָרן אין ייִוואָ, ווי אויך זײַנע געדאַנקען וועגן דער ייִדישער קולטור־ירושה און בכלל דער ראָלע פֿון אַרכיוון אין שאַפֿן דעם ייִדישן זכּרון.

From Vilna’s Ashes: Lost Treasures Return to YIVO

Prof. Rabbi Allan (Arn) Nadler

Allan Nadler is a historian and scholar of rabbinic tradition and modern Jewish thought, and a former professor at Drew University. He received Orthodox rabbinic ordination and served as a congregational rabbi in Boston and Montreal, before dedicating himself fully to the academic world. From 1991 to 1998, he served as Director of Research and Dean of the Max Weinreich Center at the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research in New York, where he led the struggle to recover Jewish archival materials from Vilna and strengthen YIVO’s relationship with Yiddish culture. He is a well-known writer and has published a wide range of articles and books on Hasidism, Misnagdim, and the relationship between religion, politics, and modernity.

In this interview, we will revisit his years at YIVO, as well as hear his reflections on Yiddish cultural heritage and the ongoing role of archives in shaping Jewish memory.

‪Born and raised in 1940s Mexico City, Finkelman spent his childhood in a community where Yiddish was the language of everyday Jewish life — at home, in school, in the streets, and deep within the soul.

‪In this conversation, he shares memories of his early years in a Yiddish school, family life, and the rhythms of community — and reflects on how Yiddish continued to live and breathe in Latin America after the war. ‪You will also hear about his long career — knowledge management in telecommunications around the world — and about his move to Israel, where he lives today.
