‪In this conversation, we will trace the path from Eastern European immigrants to the ‪Hasidic streets of today’s Mile End and Outremont. We will talk about an old world in a ‪new country, about community and boundaries, neighbors, languages, and the city, and ‪what Hasidic life looks like specifically in Montreal. A conversation about shtreimels on ‪Park Avenue, forgotten rebbes, kashrus battles, synagogues, shops, and how a Hasidic ‪Yiddish world took shape between French and English in Montreal.

‪Prof. Lapidus is a noted scholar of Canadian Jewish history, with a particular focus on ‪the Orthodox and Hasidic communities in Montreal. In his doctoral work, he examined ‪Montreal’s Jewish Community Council (Vaad Ha’ir) in the twentieth century, and he has ‪written extensively about rabbis, Hasidic rebbes, kashrut, Hasidim, and the life of the ‪Haredi community in the city. He teaches at Concordia University and is affiliated as a ‪researcher with the Institute for Canadian Jewish Studies and McGill University.

Join the League for Yiddish Shmueskrayz on Zoom. This month, we will talk about:

‪‪Clothing, Fashion, and Dressing Up 

‪

This time, we’re getting into clothing, fabrics, fashion, and all the ways people dress ‪themselves up. Whether religious or secular, men or women, then or now, clothing is ‪everywhere, and so is the whole world of words around it. So let’s talk: what do people ‪wear, how do they dress up, and how do you say it all in Yiddish?

‪We’ll read a few short texts together and then shmooze. Everyone will have a chance to ‪speak. You don’t need perfect Yiddish, just enough to jump in. Your Yiddish doesn’t have ‪to be dressed up to be alive!

Yiddish and German: Old Relatives, New Neighbors?

For hundreds of years, Eastern Europe was the center of Yiddish life. Today, after the ‪Holocaust, the map has shifted: apart from England, Yiddish is heard today mainly in ‪Western and Central Europe, precisely in countries where German is an official language ‪– in Antwerp, Berlin, Vienna, Weimar, Zurich, and other places.

‪In this panel we examine the new map together. Through living examples from today’s Yiddish world – ‪from communities and courses to festivals, universities, young Yiddish circles, street ‪signs, and efforts for official recognition – we ask: What can the new encounter ‪between Yiddish and German mean for the language and culture? What does it imply for ‪us, and for the way we address the question of the Holocaust today? Should states give ‪Yiddish more recognition and support? And can immigration from Israel to Western and ‪Central Europe have an impact on Yiddish in the coming years?
