Blizzard Thunders at Auto Club Speedway

Fontana, CA -  V8 Road Racing West visited the iconic Auto Club Speedway (ACS) last Saturday, June 10th for its third round of competition.   The Speedway is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year and today it is the same premier facility that Roger Penske envisioned and finished in 1997.   Host to both NASCAR and IndyCar events each year, Auto Club Speedway is a motorsports paradise holding numerous events in Autocross, Karting, Drag Racing, Circle Track, and Road Racing events throughout the year.

V8 Road Racing West had the pleasure of joining Speed Ventures and the Maxxis SuperMiata Series on the 22 turn 2.88 mile ROVAL circuit at Auto Club Speedway.   Speed Ventures is a great organization that hosts track days and racing events at the best road racing tracks in the Western United States.   We were provided great amounts of track time; four sessions totaling 95 minutes plus a 30 minute flag race.   This was a new venue and track experience for many and there was plenty of time to get acquainted with the high speed banked turns and technical infield road course.
V8 Road Racing West Elite class racer Bob Blizzard, top qualifier at the Buttonwillow event continued his Pole Position streak with a fast time of 1:46.6 at nearly 99 miles per hour.   Blizzard won the NASA event last month at Auto Club Speedway and he certainly knew the fastest way around the ROVAL.   In fact, Blizzard set the 4th fastest time of the weekend beating out 229 other vehicles that ranged from 700 horsepower Chevrolet Corvette ZO6’s, Nissan Skyline GTR’s, Supercar Porsche GT3’s, Dodge Viper’s, and AMG Mercedes to name just a few.
Blizzard and his Chevrolet SS would start from the pole in the combined 20 car grid, set fast time, and come home first overall and first in the Elite class.   This would be Blizzard’s second win at Auto Club Speedway in three weeks.

Second overall and first in American Thunder was Jim Wilkey in a beautiful yellow flamed Ford Taurus.   Wilkey, a professional stuntman and coordinator was a quick study at Auto Club Speedway laying down a 1:57.864 best lap in the main event.
R ounding out the top three overall was Steve Hamilton and his Chevrolet Monte Carlo was the winner in Touring.   Hamilton from nearby La Habra, was glad to be back on top of the podium after transmission gremlins sidelined him at Buttonwillow last month.   Hamilton turned his fastest lap of the weekend during the main event race with a 1:56.524.   It should also be noted that this was accomplished with a restrictive 2 barrel carbureted V8.

New V8 Road Racing West racer Dennis Eckert drove his winged Chevrolet Silverado to a strong second place finish in the Elite class.   Eckert, who has raced circle track for years is currently racing on the dirt oval at Perris Auto Speedway.   However, this was only his second time ever on a road course and in the truck yet he turned a weekend best time of 1:56.439 with his GM 604 crate engine powered Truck.
The V8 Sport Truck class featured the Jeffrey family, with dad Brian versus son Adam in their Chevrolet Silverado Spec Trucks.   This was Adam Jeffrey’s first race since swapping automatic transmission for a manual 4 speed Muncie.   Kudos to the Jeffrey Racing Team for making the event after a week of clutch issues with the conversion, this never quit attitude that comes from years of Baja desert off-road racing wins and championships.   While the new manual conversion had some gremlins, Adam was thrilled with the new drivability over the automatic,  running a 1:57.347 best lap.   Adam Jeffrey came home the victor in the battle breaking his father Brian’s three race winning streak.    Brian Jeffrey finished a close second continuing a two plus year streak of podium finishes.

Lucas Oil awarded Slick Mist Detail Packages to Jim Wilkey and Adam Jeffrey for best appearing Race Car and Race Truck.   Thank you Lucas Oil for your continued support of V8 Road Racing West.

V8 Road Racing West would like to thank our fantastic sponsors and partners for their support of Grassroots Racing: Bryans Racing Enterprises, K&N Filters, Holiday Inn Ontario Airport, Hoosier Tire West, VARA – Vintage Auto Racing Association, RPMx Racing, and CopyBoy Printing.
