The Block Island Glass Float Project

WHEN:  The hunt begins June 2nd, 2012 and continues indefinitely....it only ends when all the floats have been found!

WHAT:  200 Glass Floats (glass orbs about the size of a grapefruit) will be hidden on Block Island. Floats will be dated, numbered and stamped with the shape of Block Island.

WHERE:  100 floats on beaches and 100 floats on greenway trails. Floats will be hidden above the high tide mark but NEVER in the dunes or up the bluffs. (There will be no floats hidden between Surf Beach and Scotch Beach, and none along the inside of Great Salt Pond) They will be within one foot of either side of any Greenway trail they are placed on. (Floats only hidden on 2 Greenway trails: in Enchanted Forest and along Clay Head Trail)

WHO:  Anybody! This is finder's keepers but we ask that you only keep one per person, please.

Important Information

  • What to do if you find a float? Register it! Go to  www.blockislandinfo.com and click on the Glass Float Project link. You can also check the site to see where floats have been found and approximately how many are left.
  • All floats are clear glass except for 12 (because it is 2012), which are special colored orbs. One super special float is made entirely out of gold leaf.
  • Meet the artist- Eben Horton of The Glass Station in Wakefield, RI. will be under the Artisan Tent in town on June 2nd. Ask questions, see what a float looks like and even buy a float if you don't have time to go hunt for one!

The 2012 Glass Floats Project is Sponsored by: RISCA, Block Island Tourism Council, Interstate Navigation's Block Island Ferry and the Artist, Eben Horton.
