Dear Bloom Residents, Families & Friends:
When we asked you two weeks ago, during our biweekly update, to blast Semisonic's Closing Time and Michael Bublé’s Feeling Good while focusing upon the lyrics “every new beginning comes from some other beginning's end" and “it's a new dawn, it's a new day,” it was our way of saying Bloom Senior Living is ready to move beyond this pandemic. Said another way by the acclaimed American poet, Robert Frost: “In three words I can sum up everything I've learned about life: it goes on." That’s exactly what’s continuing to happen more and more at Bloom.
Since our last update, Bloom vaccinated four of its nine communities. The first Bloom Vaccination Clinics in South Carolina and Ohio were not only successfully completed with high participation rates, but the Bloom owners, residents and associates came together to be vaccinated and celebrate not only the beginning of the end of COVID-19, but the beginning of something else special. Indeed one of our wise residents, quoting John Major, astutely said: “recovery begins from the darkest moment." The residents know the silver lining of COVID-19 is that our Bloom community’s bond among residents, families and associates has emerged even stronger and our residents are proud (see picture above) to be a Bloomer who survived, and thrived, during this difficult transitional period; while our associates (a/k/a "Bloom Warriors") are proud (see picture above) to know they heroically made that happen. That’s what we call culture – with the best part being it’s authenticate and grew organically through trust, dedication and support. The remaining Bloom Vaccination Clinics in Florida, Louisiana and Ohio are scheduled in the coming days and weeks. Thus, all nine Bloom communities will complete the second dose by January 31, 2021 (at the earliest) and April 12, 2021 (at the latest) setting the stage for a post-COVID world at Bloom coinciding with the sunny and warm Spring weather.
Additionally, eight of our nine communities now permit visitation and are in at least Phase II Plus of our three phased reopening plan, so residents are also enjoying group activities, programming and dining.
Moreover, as life returns to the pre-pandemic Bloom way of life, Bloom's infection rates -- notwithstanding positivity rates continuing to spike throughout the country (and above 10% in counties where Bloom operates) -- remain low. Eight of our nine Bloom communities have zero active associate and residents cases. In communities that saw some cases since our last update, we were able to control and eliminate the virus with positive outcomes. We're now vaccinating the Bloom community with only eight total cases at our nine buildings serving nearly 750 residents through our nearly 400 heroic associates. The charts below, reflecting "active" and "total/cumulative" resident and associates cases, have been updated.
Finally, in other good news, fears of "Twindemic" recede as United States influenza rates stay low. Knock on wood, we're not seeing the flu rear its head at Bloom this year. According to the Guardian, the minimal presence of flu cases, while hospitals across the country are overwhelmed with COVID-19, is positive. Per Professor William Schaffner from Vanderbilt University: "we're having, to date, a profoundly mild influenza season." If you recall, Bloom previously anticipated a mild flu season given data coming out of the Southern Hemisphere telegraphing that infection control measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19 was helping curtail the spread of the flu. The low number of cases, combined with reduced travel between the Northern and Southern Hemispheres, helped mitigate the flu season here. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also reports that almost 200 million doses of flu shots were distributed throughout the United States by the end of December -- the highest number in a single flu season. Professor Schaffner added that schools undertaking measures to prevent COVID-19's spread also greatly contributed to preventing the flu's spread.
Consistent with our message that it's now time to start moving past the virus, we'll be reporting on a monthly, as opposed to biweekly, basis going forward.

Vaccine
The below table reflects the most updated community vaccine clinic dates, times and deadlines for submission of consent forms. Consent forms have been provided under separate cover. Bloom’s partner, CVS Health, will administer the vaccine (free of charge) at all Bloom communities (except Walgreens will administer it in Louisiana).
Bloom Vaccination Clinics have already successfully started in South Carolina and Ohio, with Florida, Indiana and Louisiana starting within the next thirty days. Certificates of Participation we're passed out reading: "I listened to the Science. I want to protect myself, my family, my residents and my coworkers!" How great is this!

County Positive Occurrence Rates & Visitation
We're still monitoring County positivity occurrence rates where Bloom operates, since this impacts our protocols, testing and visitation. Counties are classified as green (below 5%), yellow (5-10%) and red (above 10%). Bloom Counties are operating in red as follows:
- Beaufort County, SC: 21.5%
- Cuyahoga County, OH: 19.9%
- Pinnellas County, Fl: 11.9%
As a reminder, this is a fluid situation and visitation at each community may vary based on the current county positivity rate and community COVID-19 status. We endeavor to keep everyone as informed as possible through our global updates, but please be aware that community specifics may apply (and your Executive Director will advise accordingly). That said, it's always Bloom goal, subject to local regulations pertaining to positivity rates, to permit indoor visitation as soon as practicable.

In closing, we want our Bloom community to know that, despite the vaccine, we understand that we'll have to continue to be careful and follow our protocols (mask wearing, social distancing, etc. ). In that vein, Bloom continues to test all associates twice per week in South Carolina (at Bloom at Bluffton, Bloom at Belfair and Bloom at Hilton Head); and all associates weekly in Indiana and Ohio (at Bloom at Eagle Creek, Bloom at Kokomo and Bloom at Lakewood). We're also doing symptom and exposure based testing in Louisiana, Florida and Indiana (at Bloom at Bossier, Bloom at St Petersburg and Bloom at German Church).
That said, we've made it to the other side and our focus now is ensuring the residents flourish and live life to their fullest potential consistent with Bloom's aspirational mission. With over 90% of the residents choosing to be vaccinated and a 95% effective vaccine, that process has already started. Bloom will continue to be a safe, happy and family environment for our dear residents where they can bloom, discover their best selves and live fulfilled lives. Our best years together are ahead!
