The Impact of our Partnerships

Join us as we celebrate the impact of partnerships within the Leacock Foundation. Together, we'll explore how these meaningful connections create a ripple effect of kindness, resilience, and lasting change in our partner communities.

TOP Sports Extends Program to Benefit Thorncliffe Park Youth

Initially launched as a pilot program, TOP Sports graciously decided to extend their involvement to a total of 10 sessions. This expansion speaks volumes about the success and impact of our joint efforts in creating learning opportunities.

At the heart of our collaboration lies a shared commitment to promoting physical well-being and movement among children and youth. Many of the participants face limited access to sports and recreational activities, making initiatives like TOP Sports invaluable.

As we continue to establish ourselves within Thorncliffe Park—a collaboration that began just one year ago—we are deeply encouraged by the growing enthusiasm and engagement. Our partnership with TOP Sports has played a role in boosting our registration numbers at Thorncliffe Park Public School. From soccer to basketball, our students are eager to immerse themselves in these experiences, thanks to the dedication and expertise of the coaches.

What's even more inspiring is that Maribeth De Leon, a former Leacock participant and TOP Sports Coach, shared the impact the Leacock Foundation had on her.

"What an incredible experience it has been with the Saturday Morning Literacy Club (SMLC)! In partnership with TOP Sports, I was fortunate to be involved with the SMLC to provide youth opportunities for growth and development through recreational sports. Getting to work with an energetic and passionate group of kids who were always eager to get involved and willing to learn reminded me of my younger self when I was a participant in Leacock’s programs."

Martin Family Visit to Get Ahead

The Martin family visited Queenstown Get Ahead Primary and Get Ahead College in March 2024.

From art to the intricacies of AI, effective PowerPoint usage to Canadian geography and sports, career guidance to property development and construction, their diverse range of knowledge captivated and inspired our students.

It is worth noting the special significance of the Martin family's connection to the Get Ahead Schools. Steve and Tracy, the son and daughter-in-law, respectively, of the late Robert (Bob) Martin, former Chairman of the Leacock Foundation, have continued his legacy of philanthropy and engagement. Bob’s pivotal role in the establishment of Get Ahead, including the naming of the preschool in his honour, highlights the enduring bond between the Martin family and Get Ahead.

Amidst the Martin family's visit, there unfolded a heart-warming scene that epitomized the joy and camaraderie they brought to our school. With plastic ice hockey sticks in hand and makeshift goals set up in the classroom, our students eagerly gathered around, ready to embark on a playful journey into the world of ice hockey. In that small classroom transformed into a makeshift rink, the competitive spirit was alive and well. Students cheered on their classmates, celebrating each goal with enthusiasm and reveling in the joy of friendly competition. As we reflect on the memories created during the Martin family's visit, it is clear that the true measure of their impact lies not in grand gestures or elaborate presentations but in the simple moments of joy and connection shared with Get Ahead students. And for that, we are eternally grateful.

The impact of international visitors cannot be overstated. Each interaction serves as a unique opportunity for our students to broaden their perspectives, deepen their understanding of global issues, and foster connections beyond our borders. The Martin family's visit was no exception, leaving an incredible mark on our students and faculty.

We are grateful for the time, effort, and expertise that the Martins dedicated to planning and executing their visit. Their commitment to education and student engagement exemplifies the values we strive to instill in our students every day. In addition to their visit, the Martin Family raised $25,500 to support the student sponsorship program.

At the Leacock Foundation, we recognize the significance of teamwork and collaboration in offering children and youth a diverse range of learning opportunities.

Costco's Generous Support for Jane & Driftwood

Costco, located in Downsview North York, has stepped up to support the Saturday Morning Literacy Club at Jane & Driftwood by providing snacks throughout the year.

Statistics Canada reports that one in four Canadian children experiences food insecurity, a troubling reality that impacts their ability to thrive. In response to this pressing issue, Costco's donation not only ensures that children have access to nourishing snacks but also underscores the importance of community and corporate social responsibility.

Medardo Freire, who has deep routes in the Jane & Driftwood community, initiated this collaboration with the Leacock Foundation as part of his ongoing dedication to giving back. With 22 years of employment at Costco, Medardo took the initiative to team up with Prabhdeep Kaur at Club Demonstration Services (CDS) to supply snacks to children in underserved communities in Toronto. His recent partnership with the Leacock Foundation aims to ensure snacks for Saturday Morning Literacy Club in the Jane & Driftwood Community. Medardo expresses, "Having experienced times of need myself, I simply want to give back to others, hoping that someday they too will pay it forward."

By providing snacks for literacy programming, they're enabling children to engage in educational activities with full stomachs and focused minds.

The total cost to fund healthy snacks across all Leacock literacy and leadership programs is $16,000—a modest investment with immeasurable returns in terms of child nutrition.

As we celebrate Costco's generosity, let's also reflect on the impact of collective action in addressing systemic issues like food insecurity. By coming together as a community, we can ensure that every child has the nourishment they need to thrive, today and in the future.
