Appalachian Ski Mountain is a local fixture here in Blowing Rock, NC. It is the first ski resort in Northwestern North Carolina and the second oldest in the state. When the lodge first opened in 1962-63 it was known as, Blowing Rock Ski Lodge. It was bought six years later by Grady Moretz and four other partners and became Appalachian Ski Mountain.

Having brought skiing to the area, Appalachian Ski Mountain opened the French Swiss Ski College in 1969-70. On top of giving lessons to people who wanted to learn, they created one of the first extensive college accredited programs for skiing. Today, French Swiss Ski College has taught over 1 million people how to ski or snowboard right here in Blowing Rock.

In the 1980s the Moretz family acquired sole ownership of the mountain, and retain it today. Appalachian Ski Mountain always works to stay on the cutting edge of snow making technology. With a snowmaking water reservoir, state of the art snow blowers, and grooming equipment, they build the best snow experience the Southeastern United States.
