As I See It
Dear Alumni,
At the start of an entirely different school year (2022-23) for me, working with the Alumni Office and no longer teaching, I copied out a list of the names of all the boys in the school with the intention of connecting names to faces over the course of the year. To accomplish this I planned to descend into the cacophony of lunch and join in on the boy chatter. I sincerely wanted to stay in the mix, but most often, I find, I am dining with the faculty and leaving encounters with boys to the hallways, assemblies and the occasional covered class.
All of which is to say I am looking at the school through a new window, in a room with a street-level view, and from this vantage, seeking out boys that were—you, alumni—and your ties to the school you remember and the school you sometimes return to.
Last week, Matt Petrillo ’02 came to visit. After his tour of the school, we sat in the Alumni Office and talked about the good cheer in the hallways. “Everyone in the school is smiling,” he said. He made this remark in earnest, for so he is—was as a boy--earnest, and I felt all the pleasure and pride he had in visiting his old school.
I believe I should join the boys for lunch after all, I think, and try to learn their names and find out what’s going on with them. Perhaps find out why they’re smiling. And keep you posted.
Best,
D. Kersey

A peek at what’s happening on 78th Street (and beyond) this month!

Second-grade boys took their passion for cars into the street. These beautiful cars, complete with rolling wheels, were carefully constructed and decorated by the boys in Woodshop. Ms. Parsons, Ms. Exposito, and Ms. Menendez brought the boys down to 78th Street to create chalk roadways and enjoy their beautiful creations!

The A-S Upper Division Wrestling team had their first meet of the 2022/23 season this month, and our athletes demonstrated outstanding moves!
With multiple pins and some powerful matches, the A-S team came home with 10 wins and 6 losses. 8th graders Ben H., Oliver R., and Henry C. pinned their opponents in under 30 seconds! Coaches Tony D'Itri and Jon Burgos couldn't have been prouder.
