Dear Allen-Stevenson Alumni Community,
As the new President of the Board of Trustees, it is my pleasure to serve our school in this capacity at such an important time in our 138-year history. My wife, Valia, and I have three A-S sons: David (5th Grade), Philip (7th Grade), and Jeremy (A-S graduate, now a freshman at Riverdale). We have been a part of the Allen-Stevenson community for a decade, and I have been a board member since 2014, serving on the Building Project and Executive committees. I am honored to assume this leadership position and I am here to support the entire Allen-Stevenson community as we move forward on a number of important initiatives, a few of which are summarized below.
School Reopening
The faculty and staff at Allen-Stevenson are hard at work readying our schoolhouse for the return of more boys to in-person learning, and I’m delighted to announce we are moving up our original timeline. We are welcoming back Kindergarten through 4th Grade for in-person learning 5 days a week starting on October 27, with our 5th through 8th Grade students scheduled to alternate weekly between in-person and remote learning.
The Building Project
As you might be aware, construction on our building has continued throughout the pandemic. This past January the conversion of the Townhouse was completed, and we are very excited to announce that our long-awaited regulation-size gymnasium and rooftop teaching greenhouse will be unveiled in late November. In addition, the remaining classrooms and hallways on the 4th and 5th floors were renovated over the spring and summer. Furthermore, I’m pleased to report that the 78th Street hoist and scaffolding will be removed late fall, so our curb appeal will soon return!
New Board of Trustees Advisory Groups
The Board of Trustees has recently formed two new working committees – A COVID Task Force and a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee. These board committees will support our continual phased hybrid learning plans and the ongoing DEI work at Allen-Stevenson. I want to extend my sincere thanks to the alumni who have reached out with ideas and suggestions for ways we can move forward and make our school a stronger institution.
In closing, I would like to recognize the hard work of the faculty, staff, and my fellow board members over these past few months. I am deeply grateful for their flexibility and creativity during this tumultuous time. I know this academic year will be a complex one to navigate, but I believe in The Allen-Stevenson School and our community, and I know together we will remain strong. I welcome your feedback and thank you for all you do for our school.
Fortiter et Recte,
Metin Negrin
President, Board of Trustees

Around Allen-Stevenson: A-S Bridge 2.0
|
We successfully began the 2020-2021 academic year with the launch of our virtual learning platform, A-S Bridge 2.0. Phase 2, as noted above, begins on October 27, with the majority of boys at 78th Street for an in-person learning experience.
One thing is certain, this year is like no other, but our boys will be engaged in deeper learning, hearty laughter, new friendships and inspiring experiences as always.

Our first graders used arithmetic racks as a hands-on, student-driven introduction to arithmetic. This grouping of the beads helps our boys develop part-whole relations in early number sense.
|
|
The fourth grade students are exploring the key components necessary for a civilization to survive and thrive through creative, student-driven projects in humanities class.
|
|
During the first week of school, Upper Schoolers gathered via Zoom to create virtual lockers that showcase their unique set of passions and interests. Boys posted images of their “lockers” and found shared interest by commenting on one another’s posts.
