As I See It
Dear Alumni,
Last Thursday night in a rain that washed out the Yankee-Cleveland play-off game, six Allen-Stevenson teachers--some current, some retired--traveled to the Regal Theater in Union Square to see a screening of Graham Winfrey’s feature film Carl Cape, a happy-ending love story set on Cape Cod and dedicated to classmate Will Sargent. Graham is class of ’98—twenty-four years out!—and yet there we were, along with two of his classmates, Paul Coverdale and David Krulewitch, at his late-night screening. A Q&A followed, and Graham gave a shout-out to his A-S teachers, to each of us by name. I was surprised and touched--sentimental, I admit it, but these gatherings, with their serendipitous sheen, are how I have envisioned alumni work, the best part of it. Walking into a room and seeing, as if unexpectedly, friends, former students and colleagues, from different eras of one’s life, reawakens the warm, familial sensation of home-returns that Fitzgerald describes in The Great Gatsby : “ the thrilling returning trains of my youth. . .the chatter . . .the hands waving overhead as we caught sight of old acquaintances. . .”
As I begin working full-time with the alumni of the School, I don’t expect I will ever tire of these reunions.
A week has gone by since last Thursday’s event, and four young alumni on different days came back to visit A-S after their first taste of boarding school. Such returns, not uncommon, always welcome, count as reunions and I look forward to more—with all of you.
All best,
D. Kersey h'98

Allen-Stevenson’s Founders Day - Celebrating 140 years!
Friday, October 7 was Allen-Stevenson's Founders Day, when the School celebrated its 140th birthday. All students gathered in the gym, where Head of School Duncan Lyon welcomed everyone and introduced this year’s alumni speaker, Kerim Eken ’00. Kerim is an architect and co-founder of Eken Design. He is a member of the Allen-Stevenson Alumni Council and founder of the annual literary journal, The A-Z Files, created in memory of his classmate Zach Levy ’00. Kerim spoke about his time at A-S and how it has impacted him today. Thank you, Kerim!

Allen-Stevenson’s Lower Division Community Time sometimes sees the boys pair up older students with their younger cohorts to learn more about one another. Last week, the students had a great time reading stories and playing games together.

Allen-Stevenson has state-of-the-art learning spaces, including our science labs, but we also love to use our city as an extension of the classroom. Science Teacher Mr. Divan took his sixth-grade students to Central Park to explore the local geological wonders we may often overlook. It was a glorious fall day to do some hands-on data collection and research about the park's magnificent rock formations.

Memories of Randy Schrade '76
As many of you know, Randolph "Randy" Schrade '76 sadly passed away this summer. Mr. Schrade is remembered as a valued teacher, friend, and alumnus and will be missed by so many members of this community. As such, we ask you to share any memories, music, and/or photos with the Alumni Office at alumni@allen-stevenson.org for a tribute in The Lamplighter.
