Dear Alumni,
I had intended in this March letter to write about my California trip to A-S alumni reunions at the St. Francis Yacht Club in San Francisco and at the home of Zak Penn ’83 in Los Angeles, but alas, I couldn’t make it. Nonetheless I still want to tell you about these gatherings from the reports of California alums, organizer Liz Roberts from Development and Alumni Relations, and Headmaster David Trower, who was able to make the Los Angeles event.
Clearly there is a strong sense of community beyond NYC: The reunions were very well-attended in cities notorious for being difficult to get around and the gatherings included not just alumni but past parents, spouses, and siblings. Liz was struck by the broad range of alums--Class of 1958 through the Class of 2010--and the continuum that yet runs through their experience as she listened to two alums, many years apart, remember what it was to begin their mornings to the beat of Stanley Gauger’s baton. And as director of our yearly Shakespeare, I was delighted to learn that so many of the men working in California felt they got their start in their music and theater experiences at the School. There was, of course, wonderful storytelling about old teachers and old classmates, and recollections of outlandish boyish behavior, and battles against Buckley and St. Bernard’s.
But perhaps the most endearing thing I learned came in a flurry of back and forth emails and RSVPs that I received in the week before the events when Brandon Cohen ’01 told me that he and his younger brother Jake Cohen ’05, are regulars in Zak’s Saturday morning basketball game after meeting at a previous LA alumni event a few years ago. That’s the way it should be it seems to me—a strong community of old A-S boys 3000 miles from 78 Street.

This year, David Kersey h’98 celebrates 50 years of teaching at Allen-Stevenson—a huge milestone worth commemorating.
He has inspired the minds of future bards, taught us in clever and memorable ways about history, coached developing athletes…for which we are incredibly fortunate.
